6 x 223 Rem on varmints ?

Back in the days of yore before the 6PPC, the 6 x 47, 6 x 222 Rem Mag) dominated sporter-class benchrest competition.

There are now an abundance of lightweight 6mm varmint bullets -- 55, 58, 60, 65, 68, etc come to mind. At times, 223 Remington brass is also abundant.

What would the advantages of a 6 x 223 Rem,6 x 45) prairie dog outfit be ?

Shorter range, lower velocity. In other words, none.

The 7th edition of Hornady's manual gives 3500 fps with the 58 grain bullet in the 6 x 47,6 x 222 Rem Mag) with 28 grains of powder.

The same manual gives 3300 fps with the 55 grain bullet with the standard 223 Remington also with 28 grains of powder.

And it gives 3800 fps with the 58 grain bullet in a 243 Winchester using 40+ grains of powder.

A 6x45 will shoot the same weight bullets @ slightly higher velocites in the same length bbls. I have numerous 223's and 6x45's and 6x45 AI's. The 6x45 has better bbl life, and can double as a deer gun. There are a number of good 80-85 grain bullets that will shoot 2900-3000 fps..depending on bbl length. The downside is that there really aren't bullets lighter than 55 grains., so a 223 with bullets lighter than 55 grains will obviously shoot faster than a 55 gr. 6x45. 6x45 is a very popular African cartridge for small game and it is popular in other countries wher a military cartridge is NOT allowed. The 6x45 AI...aka...6mm TCU can be loaded to very similar velocites of the 6 PPC. If you have a 6x45 or 6x45 AI throated for longet bullets..it will easily beat a 223 at longer range. I had a 105 bullet going almost 2700 fps. That was with an OAL in the 2.6" range from what I remember.
