6 TCU - Twist and Bullets?

Hi,
I am thinking about a 6 TCU again and a rebarrel project for my Tikka 223.

What twist and bullets are the most accurate for the cartridge? Would like to shoot deer sometimes with this rifle. So I am thinking I would use Berger VLD bullets in 95 or 105 and go with a 8 twist barrel.

thoughts?
thanks haeffnkr

I built one for prairie dogs. Wanted one rifle to shoot heavier bullets. Did a 9 twist for 80 grain bullets. Very efficient cartridge. With a 26 inch barrel, I can get 3,000 fps with that bullet.

A 1-8 twist will work just fine for you.

As for bullets, the 6TCU is a 300 yard and in cartridge, so I don’t see a need to use heavier VLD bullets as they will just take up mag and/or powder space.

My absolute favorite bullet for use in the 6TCU (and 6X45) is the old 87 grain Sierra, but they don’t make that bullet anymore.

With today’s offerings, I would go with the 95 grain Nosler BT, the Hornady 85 grain Interbond, 90 grain ELD-X, or the 95 grain SST. If you want to use monometal bullets, the 92 grain Cavity Back is a great option. All of those bullets will work great on whitetails at the velocities you will get out of that 6TCU.

I had a 6TCU in a 14 in Contender. First bullet I tried was a 60 Sierra HP with 748. The first 9 shots at 100 yds just made the bunghole get darker. I never shot any other load and did not hunt deer with it. I did shoot a 500 yd gobbler with it. 12x Leupold. I would think 90gr and below with an 8 twist will work well got you with the limited powder capacity. It sure is an accurate cartridge . I had a friend , since passed, who had a groundhog rifle built around it that shot great. He went to one benchrest match with it that he won and in the process beat a fellow at the shoot who has Hall of Fame points. I could never get him to go again.
