6 Super LR reamer

I have seen several inquiries about the 6 Super LR cartridge. Just had a phone call from Pacific Tool. The reamer is $138.00. Redding offers the F/L bushing die in their Custom Die section.

I am sending money to Pacific for the reamer and head space gauges and to Sinclair for the Redding die. When the throat of my 6AI is shot out from shooting F Class at the end of this coming Summer, I am sending the rifle, reamer and gauges to my barrel smith. He will cut two inches off the chamber end and re-chamber for the 6 SLR leaving me a 28 inch barrel.

The best way to contact Pacific Tool is by fax. The number is on their web site.

For more info on the 6 SLR check out the web site of 6mmAR

Re: 6 Super RL reamer

I got a 6mmSuperX and it works great! simply use a 6xc sizer set .120-.125" high..can remember off hand..Whitely desgined it...

6mmAR specifies three different freebores for the 6 Super cartridge depending on application. I asked Pacific Tool to send me the reamer drawing for their 6 Super reamer (print # 9857) so I could check the freebore. It is 0.131". Whoever had that reamer cut was seating 115s way out.

I am going with the 0.075" freebore that 6mmAR calls their 6 Super LR/S chamber. They say it is perfect for the SMK 107, my preferred F Class bullet. I will send the reamer drawing back to Pacific Tool with the change in the freebore.

As with any non-SAAMI wildcat, you have to be very sure of dimensions before making the various purchases.

Whittley has the sizing die in stock. I like the medium throat reamer as well, many smiths have a 6mm throating reamer to make the throat deeper if needs be. A buddy and I are looking to go this route as well.

I was looking at the literature I got from the Berger LR match and was surprised how close the BC is for the 105VLD's and the 115VLD's are. Seems like you would be better off pushing the 105's at 3100 rather than 115's at 2950.

Kind of a pitty for me as I have a 115 barrel blank all ready to go.

I sure wish I'd have known about the 6 Super LR. It has all the tight stuff I hate about my 243ACK. Longer neck, milder shoulder angle, and best of all no fireforming! I also think that the 243 is just a tad big for the 6mm bore.

The Super LR is pretty much the same as the 6mm Super X, however as the cartridge has become more popular and I had Redding make up die sets for it, a concern arose that Winchester has a trademark on the "Super X" name, and in order to avoid any potential trademark infringement issues I re-named the cartridge.

FWIW - I have the Redding 6mm Super LR dies in stock now. I am not aware you can procure them without a long wait from other sources (if you can at all).

For fast powders / light bullets it is a little big. The idea behind the 6CM and the 6SLR is heavy bullets / with slow powders for extended barrel life with a little more speed. The 30deg shoulder and long neck are meant to help in the quest. Plus long necks are nice.

Robert - I figure the JGS reamers and the dies have been worked out and tested. Easy.

Please also be aware the reamer I made up that is the Kiff print #9857 is a neck turn reamer. If you are going with a no neck turn set up, a .274" neck is tight (i.e. .275" to .276" is where you need to be).

Robert,I had a reamer made up from the #9857 print with a .272 neck will the dies that you have work with this reamer? ..........jim

I use PT&G reamers, Shilen, Bartlein & Broughton barrels. Dave at PT&G makes a excellent reamer, no charge for extras. He goes out of his way to work with you on your ideas.
I just talked to Dave about this reamer, as he has a 30 day special on them, satisfaction guaranteed, $125.00. Just mention you saw it here on 6BR.

Great stuff , guys. RCW3, thanks for the tip on the no-turn neck diameter. That is why I created this thread so shooters with experience with this reamer could bring forward points that might escape my attention.

GlennL, thanks for the tip on the PT&G reamer special price.

I am edging ever closer to the reamer I really want based on honest advise from forum members.

Why not a .272" neck? it's a no turn for 6BR with Lapua and the recomended 6SLR brass is Winchester. Winy brass should give about a .268" loaded diameter. I would think its plenty of neck clearance.

Most of the Winchester brand .243 brass I have purchased in the past year (at least three different batches) for the Super LR has loaded out unturned to around .2725" or so, and I skim neck turned it to .2715" to .272" for use with the .274" neck chamber, so that is why I would be wary running a .274" neck for a no neck turn reamer.

You cannot use Lapua brass for the Super LR without neck turning it since the Lapua .243 brass shoulder metal is thicker than the neck metal and when you re-form .243 brass to become the Super LR, part of the shoulder becomes the neck and with Lapua brass you then have a big donut at the base of the neck. The comparison of Lapua .243 brass neck thickness to 6BR brass is not correct and Lapua brass loads out even thicker than Winchester brand brass (i.e. I neck turn the Lapua brass to .2725" to .273 in most cases and use it in a .275" chamber.

Honestly for a no neck turn chamber you might consider running a minimum .275" neck in the chamber.

Mike, I run a .272 neck because i turn necks and .274 will not let you clean them up completely at.002 clearance. I don't shoot xc anymore just br. Every little bit helps. When i use Lapua brass i neck turn with an old neck reamer i have and i cut hard in to the shoulder first to fire form,no donut, then make a finish cut after with the K&M......jim

+ 1 0n using a larger .275 NK with this case. I also have had extensive use of this case ( SuperX vesion). I went against Roberts advise and used Lapua Brass. It turned into alot of unwanted headaches do to the thicker brass in the Neck and SHOULDER area. Continous donuts were the result. I finally went to the Winchester brass and Whallaaa problem solved.... I have to learn the hard way I guess.

Tight necks... are they really worth it???? It seams that the trend in my area is getting away from this unless you shooting bench rest. And Its been proven right here on this web sight that some Benchrest shooters are getting tight tight tight groups with a no turn neck. You just dont need a Monster neck like a factory in my veiw. Too each his own.... and sometimes its fun to tinker.

Good Luck to all who try it.

The .274 neck on my Pacific reamer works great. I put together a GAP rifle with the pacific/ noveski version of the 6 super lr reamer.. man is it sweet . Call pacific and ask for the reamer print . Top shelf folks over there. thanks trace

ar1957, PT&G sent me print # 9857 which shows a .274 neck as you state. What brass are you using in your 6 Super? Turned or unturned?

9857 also shows a .131 freebore. Did you stick with this? What bullet are you using and how is it seated?

Thanks
Bill

Yes Frank,Carl and I used the same reamer and we do not turn the brass . We also run the .130 fb using a 1.5 lead . You can count on this combo . You know we have a 100 power comparator here and we check every reamer that our customers send . We find that the pacific reamers are far better in every way compared to the JGS tools . Dave Tubb and many others have told us the same thing so give Kathleen a call and get one of these if you are using the 115 gr . If you go with 105 or 107's get a .o69 fb reamer. Thanks Trace
