6 ppc vs. 6 br

Just in case I decide to get into 100-200 yard benchrest, which is much closer that shooting 1000 yards...won't give it up...but it might be fun to travel 30 minutes and shoot rather than 4 hours to shoot in competiton.

Okay would a 1-8 twist 6mmbr be able to pull double duty if need be or should I have a dedicated short range br rig like a 6 ppc or a slower twist 6 mmbr work out.

Do you want to be competitive in 100y, or just shoot against yourself? 1:8 is made for heavy bullets, so long-range and thus not optimal for short-range. You could get a second barrel; one in 6PPC and 1:14 and one in 1:8 for a BR... I tried that with my LV, attaching a 6Dasher barrel. It's nice, but will not run with the big boys at 500+. So it is still a compromise.

I want to be competitive for sure. I hear you get a ton of bore life with a 6 ppc too.

I'll have to go to one and observe and get the specs as far as weight and what not. No sense jumping into a project and have it fail to meet specs.

This would be for next year's season. No doubt I am not going to fire a 6.5x.284 and or a 6.5x55 at 100 and 200 yards and shoot the bores out.

As Jim said, the key word is competitive. At 100-200 yard Benchrest the quickest way to competitiveness is a 6PPC. There are other ways for sure, such as the little 22s, BR, etc. but they take more time and effort.

Two or more dedicated rifles is the best way to go but a switch barrel along with a removable weight system is the next best alternative. In reality, in todays world you almost need 3 rifles,or 3 barrels) to be truly competitive at the 3 benchrest distances,100/200, 600, and 1000).

And, I'm not sure where you heard that a 6PPC barrel is a long term proposition. Most will cease to be truly competitive after as few as 800 rounds.

Rhino,

I don't know the stock configuration you have, but what you are trying to do is shoot one gun, two barrels at close range and 1000 yard BR? There are stock considerations. Not all stocks fit the guidelines for short range BR. Provided that you have a stock plan figured out... I noticed that you are in New York? That puts you very close to IBS Score Competition. In IBS Score,VFS) your rifle weight is not limited to 10.5 pound like an LV group gun. VFS is limited to 13.5 pounds. And if your long range stock fits IBS short range parameters and you could fit a barrel to still keep the gun under 13.5 pounds, my recomendation would be to shoot IBS score competition,VFS). That being the case, don't limit your choices to 6mm, go .30 BR. Most .30 BR's last well over the 5000 rounds mark.

Maybe I'm way of base, let me know!

Canastota NY is where the range that shoots 100-200 yard benchrest.

Like I said, I know nothing of this game. The membership is $125 a year or so. 30 minute drive from the house.

Nice covered range...goes out to 600 yards...which would be a welcomed distance for some F-class work. I could shoot in the rain..which would be welcomed as the Old Man doesn't require me to work with him in the rain...he doesn't work in the slop either. Whether is logging, splitting fire wood, house, rental house renovations, etc...he always is keeping busy now since he is retired. Drives me nutz as I want to get range time. But I can't really say no for all that he has done for me.

Canastota is having the IBS Group 100/200 Nationals this year. That starts August 12 and runs a week. If you have a chance, be there check it out. Also near you is Camillus Range, They also shoot IBS Group. A check of the IBS website shows schedules for Dunhams Bay, NY. Some IBS clubs shoot group, some Score, some both. You'll have to check them out and see what they offer. Here is the IBS website, http://www.international-benchrest.com/
Dick Grosbier runs the site and does a great job keeping it up to date. Also on the site is the full IBS rulebook. It will explaing stock and barrel requirements per class. check it out.
