6 PPC for deer hunting

New to the site, and glad to see a special place for PPC users. I have a lovely little Sako so chambered, but alas, no bullet manufacturer seems to make a bullet light enough to handle the twist that also would be suitable for deer hunting. It simply amazes me that Nosler makes a Partition for .22 caliber, and yet only at the high end of the .243 caliber.

Any of you use your 6 PPC for medium game? If so, what do you use?

You'd be fine shooting normal 6 PPC bullets as long as you limited yourself to broadside double lung or neck shots.

The problem is that too often you're not going to get those shots.

Put the Sako back and save it for factory varmint matches. It's too precious to shoot out the throat doing something that a $350 budget 243 will do better.

Go to a Barnes 80 Gr TSX or TTSX depending upon which is available. They will do the trick. They will open at moderate velocity & penetrate. Excellent bullet for a 6mm. They are the little train that could.

They wont stabilize in a 14 twist. I tried the 85gr TSX in my old 12 twist 6BR, could barely hold it on a sheet of notebook paper at 150yds. I cut the bullets off at bottom groove on my lathe making them weigh 62gr, groups shrunk to under 1" at 150. Still dont know if they would stabilize in a 14 twist though.

I've neck shot a few does with 65g Bergers in my Sako 6PPC. Knocked them down no problem. Never tried a shoulder shot, just didn't trust it.

I used a 75vmax on a deer once with a 6br. Heart shot. Got a pass thru as well. Nice hole on exit. To be fair, it was a small deer. It was also very close. Like bow range close. I have no doubt it would still kill farther out, but the pass thru might not happen. Not sure they would stabilize in a 14 twist, but maybe worth a try?

My oldest son killed his first deer when he was 5 with my RUGER VT 6 ppc. Shot it at 140 yrds. It was a doe and she went about 50 yrds. It was with a 65gr. Berger and passed through. Only 1 we've tried it on.

I would use another rifle. With the twist you have, any bullet that will shoot should not be used on deer, in my personal opinion. :)

Hornady makes a 75gr varmint bullet that will stabilize in the 14tw barrels. I'm not saying I'd trust it to break through shoulder bone but it will kill a deer.
They use the same bullet in the custom line of 243 ammo, it shoots damn good.

I have taken between 35 and 40 Deer with a 6BR using a few different bullets....My favorite is the 65 Gr. Berger BT..Shoot them in the shoulder or behind the shoulder...I'm getting about 3400 fps and you shouldn't be far behind that velocity.....BTW if you place the bullet at the junction of the shoulder and backbone, they drop in their track every time...Its a great bullet and its all I use now....I use to think I needed a .270 or something like that...If you can place your shot, its all you need out to 250 yds or so...If the Deer is moving, you may need something larger........
