6 mm x107 SMK

I have used these with success in my 6BR for a couple years. Bought a new batch and they have changed. Look different; Appear to have been pointed. Shoot different; group opened up from well under a half inch to over one inch> Any with observations on this before I go down the rabbit hole?

If the ogive is farther out or back, you may need to adjust them that amount. Compare to old ones. Sometimes it is a simple seating adjustment of a few thousandths. The new ones i saw look great. Points are real even and nice. Matt

Ive been using the pointed 107s for the last 12months, found a load very quickly and same load has worked very well all year have won a fair few matches with them.Id definitely look at re-tuning your new ones.

I have shot the "new" pointed 107's to 1K with a Dasher, jumping them .025 with good results. My complaint with most Sierra bullets is the inconsistency with the ogive measurement. Bullets within the same batch varied .060 or more. Accuracy depended on sorting them LTO and/or varying their seating depth to keep them about the same. When I did this they shot very well, but I have given up on SMK's. A current batch of Berger 108's only varied .003 LTO. Made loading them easy. I shoot Noslers CC's for practice and their LTO is excellent.

Just amazes me that they still can't keep lots separated on even their best selling bullets. Why go to all the trouble to make what by all account's is a great bullet and just randomly dump them in the box. :eek:o_O

Admittedly I've only shot 3 different batches of the 500 box SMK so my experience is a little limited, but i must have been lucky with all 3 as the max difference measuring base to ogive was .014. Out of each box of 500 i had an average of 30 projectiles relegated to the 'foulers' pile, the rest were in the .003-.005 range.

Wow .060 is a lot. Typically I get about .005 difference with a few outliers. I haven't measured any of the new pointed ones. My buddy and others have told me they measure pretty good. I did see them and the points looked really good. Matt

If you're just shooting for fun, no big deal for the most part, but in competition, having a bullet close to or into the lands when your expecting a .025 or more jump (several HM's I know jump their Palma bullets .040), will change your pressure and your impact...so, that's where the high 9's or worse 8's came from. IMO, FWIW consistency goes beyond, charge weight, primer and bullet selection. Those things being equal, consistent neck tension and jump/jam are key to giving the bullet a good start toward the X ring.
