6 mm 80 gr TTSX performance ?

Does anyone have experience with the above bullet at longerish (400-500yrds) range on deer? Just wondering if it's enough in the off chance I would shoot that far.

Thank you.

I just read an article in the current issue of Predator Extreme magazine on .245 cartridges and, according to the author, he cites an 85 grain Federal Trophy out of a .243, exiting the muzzle at 3,200 f.p.s. packs nearly 1,000 ft. lbs of energy at 400 yards. Sounds like it would do the job. I'd guess the TSX to perform similarly.

If pushed at 3,200 fps, the 80 gr TTSX has ~1,000 lbs of energy at 300 yards. Plug your info into a ballistic calculator and see how far it carries 1,000 lbs of energy, which is the rule of thumb for whitetail. Also make sure impact velocity is above 1,800 fps for reliable expansion.

My sons model 7 .243 shooting the 80 grain TTSX is very flat shooting and I would have no doubts about its performance out to 3-400 yards. He shot a large doe last year here in Pa. at a tad over 200 yards and deer flopped dead. Very impressive bullet...

I think some of you guys have gotten a little carried away with what some bullets will do relative to distance to the animal and the requirements (ENERGY) needed for a clean "responsible" kill on a deer!

The given energy for a clean kill was established many years ago at about 1000 ft lbs (average) witch is very reasonable. This can very easily be due to the size of deer in various parts of the country . This also has a lot to do with where one hits the deer relative to how the projectile works.

You need to do your homework before you make bold statements about the design of the projectile you use and how it reacts to the energy you are using. If you think some of the brash statements about really long range killing of deer is realistic contact the manufacture of the bullet you intend to use, give them your caliber, velocity, and barrel twist and see what they have to say. You might be unpleasantly surprised! :(

In 6mm the Barnes bullets are one of the best choices, second is the Swift Scirocco, the Nosler Accubond.
The advantage of the Barnes bullets is that they are monolithic and can run at extreme velocity without worry of their coming apart before reaching the target. Controlled expansion, 8" wound channel deep penetration and frequent pass throughs.

I'm probably crazy for entering this thread and do use ballistic tables with 900 ft. lbs. for effective ranges. That said I shot one with a Hard Cast wide flat nose bullet from my .41 Rem. Mag. chambered Redhawk at 45 yards and it was very dead after a shoulder shot. There is no way I was in the 900-1000 and I could stick my fist through the hole! If expansion occurs to prevent penciling and you put two holes(one in, one out) in the Boiler Room a quick death is insured. Please don't flame me, JMHO and experiences. :)

Believe what you wish .

Hi Changeling, not quite sure what you are looking for in this thread, but the 80 grain Barnes TTSX is absolute death on whitetails especially when driven hard. My son who just turned 15 is going to run his model 7 in .243 here in Pa. again in 3 days which has original walnut stock and has been bedded/built by my local smith and sports a 22 inch finished Rock Creek SS barrel with 10 twist with a full action workover and we are pretty much limited to maybe 90-95 grain max bullet wise. He has shot 5 deer in last 4 years with 5 Barnes 80 grain TTSX bullets pushed by the current load of IMR 4064. .274 match chamber and I'm turning the necks on the Nosler brass for his rifle to a loaded diameter of .269 . That's his bragging rights at school: "My dad uses custom Nosler brass and turns the case necks on my deer rifle" This rifle is a hammer and 4 years ago i started my son out with reduced loads shooting same bullet in same rifle with H4895 load recipe courtesy of a fellow member here on 6BR. Last year and now again this year we have bumped the powder charge up to adult standards. I wonder why i even bring my rifle with me. ;D But thats what its all about is ensuring you friends or family have a nice piece of equipment and deliver the kill shot when and where it needs to be. I believe what I see and seeing is believing.. Nothing better to sit back and enjoy the show. As to OP's post the 80 grain TTSX at semi long range will kill whitetail. But upon thinking on my 43 years of deer hunting my longest kill was around 225 yards. And that was when I was young and never reloaded. Now I prep my rounds for my son and I like I do my 1000 yard BR rifles and it payed off last year as my son rolled his big doe at over 200 yards running. The Barnes TTSX bullets simply kill better and faster then any bullet i have played with. I do not talk about ft. pounds, energy or distance etc. It's all about knowing your load and your rifle.

It doesn't take a lot of energy to push a bullet through a deer's heart and lungs. Any animal with that damage done to it will die pretty quickly.

I've been using 85 grain Partition's in my 6x45 but with all the positive response to the 80 grain TXS I'm looking forward to trying it next year. We'll be lead free here in a few years and I need a new bullet.

Anyone have any pics of recovered 80/85 Barnes used on game?

Here is mine -

Last antelope season I shot a buck at 344 yards just behind its shoulder, well it punched through him and a doe that was just a tad lower on the hill and behind the buck hitting it through the neck.
I never found the bullet in her.
I was very lucky to have my usual 2 tags for either sex.
Buck dropped on the spot, the doe trotted 80 yards and fell over dead.
This was in my 6x45, 80g ttsx bullet at 2537 fps.
In a .243 I would have no issue at 400-600 yards w/that bullet or the hornady gmx solid.
I run them at 3300 fps in my own .243

I haven't tried the barnes bullets yet but I do have some exp. with with smaller cal. and deer hunting. I can say for a fact that some of the new bullets on the market today kill better than many of the old style bullets of years gone by. I don't get the guys that think they need a 300 mag. to kill a whitetail at 100- 200 yds. Dead is dead.

Well I see that a lot of people here really like the Barnes bullets. I asked here about them because I was really interested several months ago but never received any thing close to the replies this post has received.

They sound (never used) like they do a great job out to maybe 300 yards, but no one here has said anything (experience) about the long range question of shots past 300 on out to 4 or 500 yards.
In my opinion they will fail out at those distances because of bullet weight and velocity with will drop off fast. They just do not have the weight necessary to provide the energy for deep penetration as a long range projectile.

Now, if you are shooting relatively small deer they should perform spectacularly because of there very rugged construction as long as the velocity is at least 1800 fps ( A guess) at short to medium range.
This is my opinion after killing more deer than you can imagine.

Also, above I suggested above that if you doubt the things I say, you should contact the manufacturer (Barnes) give him the caliber of your rifle (6mm), twist, bullet, velocity and ask his opinion of HIS product at the ranges past 300 yd or so.
However I don't believe some of you want to hear the answer, just because you have killed several deer and think you have set some sort of standard for the 6mm projectile!

Hi Changeling, yesterday was first day of rifle deer season here in Pa. My son was using his .243 with the 80 TTSX'x. Around 2:20 after a slow morning he racked a buck and a doe that were running together at roughly 80-100 yards with 2 shots. Upon walking up to the dead deer I was amazed at the punchout hole on the doe. He hit it high in chest and bullet punched out the side taking the heart out big time. Exit hole was size of a quarter! The buck he hit in the side behind shoulder and again no heart to be found. Inside his chest was total destruction. Both deer might have gone about 50 feet just on adrenaline. I actually jumped up the IMR 4064 in his load .9 of a grain to a higher node and guesstimate they are running at 3300 fps. His rifle sports a match .243 chamber in a Rock Creek barrel and shoots like a custom with these Barnes bullets in neck turned Nosler brass. Incredible bullet. I have no doubt they will kill and do it very well out to 3-400 yards..

Changling read post 14. 5Spd shot through 2 deer at 345 yards with a 6x45 (6mm 223) at only 2500 fps at the muzzle. That would be similar ballistics to a 243 Win at well over 500 yards. Incredible penetration.

One of the largest Brown bears ever killed was done in by an Eskimo woman with a .22 rim fire rifle, the bear was in a bear trap.
When I was 12/13 years old I killed one of the largest bucks of my life with a .22 rim fire single shot rifle out of our barn window ???
