6 MM/284

SIRS,
I HAVE SHILEN ACTION AND WANT TO MAKE A GROUNDHOG GUN FOR 700 YD SHOOTING.WHAT BULLET AND VOLOCITY CAN BE USED>I WANT SOMETHING FLAT SHOOTING IN 6 MM AND ACCUATE ALSOBARREL LENGTH OF SAY 28 INCH CAN BE USED. ANY THOUGHTS ARE WELCOMED.
GARY B.

I shoot a Savage single shot 6-284 with a Pac-Nor 27 1/2 barrel. The gun was put together by Fred Moreo at SSS. If you plan to shoot light bullets, I would suggest going with a 6mm or 243 Ackley, as you really don't see the velocity advantage with a 6-284. I set my gun up to shoot 87 V-Max's, and many consider this to light to take advantage of the 6-284 case capacity. I was only able to shoot my rifle several times before the weather shut me down, so I can't give you an idea on velocity with the 87 V-Max. You should be able reach 3600 fps easily. My prior rifle was a 6mm AI, and I was getting aound 3800 fps with a 70 BT,49.5grs IMR4350). Hope this helps.

Hi Gary,

My 6/284 is the following. Ruger 77V action set up as a switch barrel with a Douglas 27" barrel with an 8" twist. Dan Dowling set it up with a .262" neck and it was built around the 95gr. Berger VLD bullet. I went with the fast twist, heavy bullet setup for the long range varmint work simply because the .243AI will equal the performance of the 6/284 with the lighter weight bullets of 85gr. and lighter. The newer, slow burning powders we have today really do bring the 6/284 alive with the heavier bullets and the longer barrels. I still have not had a chance to shoot this rifle since I am still waiting for my stock.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine
