What would be a "normal" percentage of failed cases during fireforming? I lost 3 in 45. I know one of them had a flaw in the case shoulder area and I probably should never have even considered firing it. Just curious if my failure rate sounds common?

I normally only loose about 1 or 2 per hundred. Make sure that your chamber is very clean and DRY. Most of the cases I've lost have been because I didn't have the chamber dry of all solvent.

I lost two in the last 12 and had just cleaned the rifle. I go into the chanber with a bore mop soaked with brake dry, but may not have had it cleaned out good enough. I'll pay more attention to that. Not sure what makes the triangular indentation defect that you see once in awhile in a batch of Lapuas, but one failure was because of that. Thanks for your help.

Out of a 150 or so I've only had two that didn't work.

I jam my bullets way into the rifling though and don't load real hot loads for fireforming, hot enough to get a good form but not so hot you wreck em.

I don't know if that'd help you or not, but might be worth a shot, pun intended.

I have lost only 1 in the last 200 fireformings... WHY so few? Good question.. After all the neck turning, necking up, necking back down etc... I anneal the NEW cases... The "softening up" of the now workhardened brass, will go A LONG WAY to keep from losing brass...

I'm hoping to find a relatively cheap Wilson 6mm Dasher seater die to hydro-form my brass to about 80% or so. Then fireform after that. Hopefully that will ease the process. Might not. Will have to wait until my build is done and see.

I have done 200. 100 with bullet jam, and 100 with cow and neck expanding, and have not lost a case. I can't recall where I got the info, but it said to leave some lube on the case body, which I do. Both methods worked fine, but all cases required a second firing to really make the shoulders sharp. Couldn't tell any difference in accuracy on second firing. I prefer the cow method as it saves bullets down the tube. Barlow

I just turn the cases, jam a load 30 thou with 3 thou tension and shoot. The cases form fine and are quite uniform in length. Havent lost any out of the 100 fireformed. I have a fireform barrel that I used with some old gold box cases for varmints and doing the false shoulder method I lost half a dozen out of about 70. Though I feel with an annealing I wouldnt have lost as many, its just much easier to turn the cases, jam and shoot.
