6 dasher with 6.5 stayball powder

Weather, work and being sick have slowed me down a lot but I have been testing Stabal in a 6br

With 103s in a 28" barrel it easily ran up to 2950 with no pressure. I need to tune seating next to see how the accuracy is. Not sure when that's going to happen.

I am curious. Your at 2950 with 103s, good spot. Now you adjust seating depth and get back to back repeatable groups that make you happy. Do you stop at that point or do you do anything else? And if so what.

Has anyone used staball 6.5 powder in a 6 dasher with 105 hybrid
I have not but upon reviewing hodgdons data i bet the dasher or maybe a 6gt thoated long for some 109-115 grain pills and a long pipe could get up to pressure and get some very impressive ballistics. The 6gt in hodgdons data is pushing the 110 atip at 3040 out of a 24" pipe. Thats going a long long way. Dasher could probably power a 115 vld or dtac pretty fast if throated right for more capacity.

When I get serious about it I'll find the best seating then retune powder. This is an old single shot Savage with a Criterion barrel, the triggers alright but not great. The gun has shot one hole groups at 200 yards on Varget & 105 amaxs so if it looks promising on the Stabal I'll probably try it in a 6 BRA bench gun.

My info is based on a 26" Criterion/Savage 6-BR.

I started off using Berger 105/30.0 VarGet combo and was very happy with the results.
Had to switch over to the 105 Match Burner due to availability.
A couple of months go by and I'm down to like 3lbs of VarGet so I started looking for an alternative.

Read a thread on using Staball in the BR so I figured I'd give it a try.

Ended up at 35.1gr and got another 50fps out of it.

It's not hard to find and a big bonus is I can drop it out of my Harrells measure.

Win, win.

I tested some today in my Dasher. A 26 inch Shilen barrel with 105 Hornady bullets and was a little disappointed in the velocity. At 36.9, Hodgdon indicates a velocity of 2943. I was 100 fps lower than that but their velocity is based on a 30 inch barrel.
The case is pretty full at 37.3 grains

One of the things I've found with Staball is that it has shot better for me with it running at max.
In the BR, I used a 265 bushing by mistake and it did better accuracy wise and the velocity increased around 25fps over the previous load with the lower neck tension. I don't remember the ES/SD though.
I replicated those loads and my current barrel likes the heavy neck tension.

Today I changed tactics. The last test was at .003 jump and an RWS primer. Todays shooting was with a Winchester primer and at .015 jam. Shot 5 3 shot groups over a chrono, adding powder along the way, and got the velocity up to 3000 fps. Had no signs of pressure. Groups were still not worth a dang but more consistent towards max. Best group was a high .3 and the ES ranged from 25fps to 55 fps
I think I'm done

Yeah dasher might be a little small for this powder. 6GT though...

Why? Re-16 and H4350 work just fine in it. The thread is about the dasher
Different powder dynamics. Stick tends to work well over a wider range of pressures especially single base. Ball in my experience likes to be run on the hot end of the pressure spectrum. Staball in my ar10 6.5 creed tightened up really well once we got it up around 2680 fps. Below that poor results in gerneral. After that point it grouped really well and sd numbers tightened nicely across the board.

Dasher with 105s might not have the boiler room to hit that point with staball. Heavier and or longer bearing surface pills seated really long (fiddle with solid neck tension and jam as well to increase shot start pressure) might be able to do it. the 105 with less weight and bearing surface is probably just a bit small to hit best pressure before significant compression starts to screw your stats.

Got any 115 dtacs lying around you can try?

The 6gt could probably do it with the 105s. That's why I brought it up again.

now, you are on my list

Has anyone used staball 6.5 powder in a 6 dasher with 105 hybrid
Just finished shooting 6.5 StaBALL in the 6 dasher earlier today. Snow on the ground, sunshining, 40 degrees, cold wind blowing, froze my as off, shooting from the prone...with Magneto Speed Chronograph. Bartlein 28" 5 r barrel, .272 x .104 chamber, all bullets seated .010 back of contact. Alpha Munitions 6 dasher brass Rem 7 1/2 primers. Here are the results:
All powder is 6.5 Staball
107 SMK 37.0 gr = 3013 ave 26 s/d
107 SMK 37.5 gr = 3068 ave 14.6 s/d
107 SMK 38.0 gr = 3088 ave 17.3 s/d
107 SMK 38.5 gr= 3133 ave 5.5 s/d
110 SMK 37.0 gr = 2973 ave 17.1 s/d
110 SMK 37.5 gr = 3020 ave 13.3 s/d
110 SMK 38.0 gr = 3061 ave 13.0 s/d
110 SMK 38.5 gr = 3098 fps
115 DTAC 37.0 gr = 2966 ave 6.3 s/d
116 DTAC 37.5 gr = 3044 ave
Accuracy was not on par with most 6 dasher loads but it was cold and windy, and I was uncomfortable shooting in the prone.. plus, standard deviations were too high on most loads...that improved at the top charges and velocities for each bullet in my barrel. It has promise as a high velocity powder, if you search for lower S/D s and a little more accuracy... Alliant 2000 MR had lower S/Ds better accuracy out of the gate and high velocity. The old standard Varget and RL 15 loads provide best accuracy and S/Ds in my barrel. For your information only these loads were safe in MY rifle.
