6 Dasher VS 300 Mag or 338 Lapua

I have seen some 600 and 1000 yard BR shooters make the move to a 6 Dasher. Is anyone shooting the Big Bore 300's or 338's?

If you have moved to the dasher from a Big Bore, why?

Thanks!

Terry

The big .30/.338's seem like overkill at 1000K. There are less punishing ways to get to 1000yds just as flat.

Terry,
RECOIL!! ;)

I shoot a 6br and love the recoil but I've been out shot by a 300win mag when the wind is bad. I know the dasher is moving faster than the br but IMO the trade off is still the wind. Like I said IMO the 30's will hold there line better in the wind than the 6's will; so it just depends on how bad you need to buck the wind. If you can shoot fast or dope the wind really well you may like the 6's much better but if you can't the 30's will be a little more forgiving (wind not recoil). Brian Brown.

Seems like you would see more 7mms. Never makes sense to me, with all those nice bullets now.
I like it for the windy days and the 6s for the calm.

Sorry guys to butt in

I live in theuk and over here 99% shooters are male

Don't you think it's a male think when one is on the range
I am shooting a Kick ass caliber ?

In the limited class completion this factor does not come in and guys get back on terra firma and get on with it

don't have personal exsperience with the 6 dasher, but I know lots of people shooting fast 6's for 1000 yards. and with a 30" tube some of the fast 6's are getting to 1000 yards with only around 20MOA. Thats what I call fast flat and wind bucking ability! if your going to 1500 yards or hunting then yes 7's, 30's, and 338's have there advantages, but for paper or steel targets a fast 6 is hard to beat!

I made the move from 6.5x47 Lapua to both the 6 Dasher and a few different 30's.

My go forward plans as I finish up my last 30 caliber rifle is to bring a 6 Dasher and one of the 30's to each match. Depending on the conditions when I arrive at the range will determine which one I shoot.

Could shoot 30's all the time, but the 6 Dasher uses less powder, has less recoil and considerably better barrel life.

At 600 and 1000 yards, the Dasher is for calm days and the 30's are for windy days. I reverse this at 300 yards shooting a slow twist 30 cal with flat base bullets on calm days and the Dasher on windy days.

I have seen the dashers shoot some amazing groups in pretty heavy winds, I think a lot of it is the driver no matter if he/she is driving a .300 or a 6 Dasher, winds or no wind.

If the driver had both the 300 and 6 there which would he pick up to shoot in say 15mph wind? That is the question and not so much what the driver can do.

Ballistically, why the love for 30 caliber?

In thirty caliber, you have to go to the 185g bullets to get the equivalent BC of the 105g Hybrid in 6mm; you have to go to the 200g Hybrids to get an equivalent BC to the 140g 6.5mm bullet; 215g Hybrid to get an equivalent BC to the 180g 7mm Hybrid. With any of those bullets, you need enough case capacity and powder to reach 2850-2900 fps of the 6.5x47 or 284 Win or 2950-3050 to reach the velocity of the Dasher. With that velocity, you also have the additional recoil and torque of the 30 caliber chambering.

Here is a quote from Bryan Litz talking about the inherent precision of the 6.5 vs the 7mms.

Consider the 6.5mm vs 7mm debate. The consensus seems to be that the 6.5mm is inherently more precise than the 7mm’s, probably due to the effects of recoil on the platform and shooter. However the 7mm is a better ballistic performer, so there’s a trade-off. The introduction of high BC .30 caliber bullets is simply an extension of that same trade off. Rifles built to shoot the new .30 caliber heavies (~230 grain range) will probably be capable of less inherent precision than the 6.5mm’s and 7mm’s, but will be even better ballistic performers than the 7mm’s.

To me, the inherent precision of the of the 6mm over the 6.5mm over the 7mm over the 30 caliber makes me want to shoot those calibers at shorter distances where inherent precision is more important than environmental conditions.

If you are shooting prone, 1000 yard competition, go with the 6mm Dasher. Most of the time in normal shooting conditions (wind changes of 5mph or less) the 6mm Dasher loaded with a 105gr bullet out of a 30” tube will be a winner. Low recoil and reloading costs will give you 2 to 5 times more trigger time of practice. If the conditions are bad, then 6.5mm x .284 and up is the better choice.

For tactical shooting, especially if you have a muzzle brake then 190gr bullet on top of a .300 Win Mag or 250 to 300gr bullet on top of a .338 Lapua Mag is a good choice.

I suppose the 6mm Dasher vs .300 Win Mag or .338 Lapua Mag question, is really prone, 1000 yard competition vs informal 1000 yard tactical shooting.
