6 Dasher: Varget vs. RL15

It seems after reading alot about Dasher loads that RL-15 appears to be used overwhelmingly more than Varget which seems odd since Varget is more universally touted as the powder most used in the parent 6BR case.
Chocolate vs. vanilla or is there a reasoning behind it?

Chocolate vs vanilla

I've used both with superb results. R15 is a little dirty and Varget varies from lot to lot.

I pretty much use R15 in both of my Dashers.

I use Varget almost exclusively. Tried and use RL 15 but the powder is so dirty and the x counts are not as good in my rifle.

Just buy a case of Varget and don't worry about lot variations. You will then have more variations due to different barrels.

Thanks for the input guys. I have heard that if you run the RL15 on the hot side it actually burns cleaner but can be dirty at mid to lower loads and maybe that's why there are 2 camps on this powder and is part of the reason I posted this question.

While cleaning a barrel is not my favorite thing to do shooting tight groups is and that is why I shoot RL 15. Running the 105's at +/- 3025 fps with a 30'' tube I can get between 50 to 65 rounds without losing accuracy.

I gave up on Varget, what i have left i use to fire form.RL-15 in the bartlein ,Kreiger and the Brux will hammer and there are some that shoot faster.......jim

Here is my take on this subject. if you have a 6br or dasher or BRX or whatever 6br variant and it prefers varget over RE15 then you have a great barrel! Most all 6mm 8 twist BR barrels will shoot RE15 but like i say, if it will shoot varget better then you have a winner!! For my 6BR work i have been playing with XBR 8208 and it looks dam good! Some will say it real close to varget anyway. I dont know i just let the paper talk to me! Shoot varget first, and if it shoots then enough said!! Lee

chuckhunter I been working and not on line , so did not see your question untill now. I am running 105 BTM Breger moly's and have several 400 yard targets below.5''. Cant seam to get that with varget though.

Thanks Terry, I have found basically the same thing, my accuracy node is 3020 from a 27" .237 bore, 8 twist Kreiger, shooting 105 Berger VLD"s, Danzac coated. E.S. 9 and S.D. 4. I have access to a private range where I can shoot to 480 yds. Will be trying it first chance I get.

Hey Fellers, Just my two-bits worth, I've fallen in and out of love with R-15 and varget so many times its unreal. We have a good range on the farm out to 1200 yds. and two dashers, plus several BR's in the family. It seems after all of the testing on our part its Varget when it real hot ( over 95) and we get a lot of that here in Arkansas, and R-15 when its cooler. I guess I would have to say that I like the R-15 better because I always go back to it when it get cool enough. That part about pushing R-15 right up to the limit and getting less carbon I agree with, With 8 thru 14 twist Kreiger, Hart, 5C broughton, and others I can't tell a lot of difference in carbon between them. Like I said , just my two-bits worth, ya'll have a good one,JF

I hear that Hi tech has some military pull down RE15 thats working out real well with the long range guys. it runs about 90 bucks per 8lb. Might be worth a try. I think i will! Lee
