6 Dasher Reamer/Bullet Advice Needed

Jet

Gold $$ Contributor
I'm in the process of putting together a LV 6 Dasher for 600-1000 BR. Components are:

- BAT B 1.53 Round dual port (on order)
- McMillan MBR Stock (on order)
- Krieger 1:8 HV countour 31" (have)

I've done a good bit of research but am still looking for recommendations on which bullet is preferred and which reamer to use for the preferred bullet. I'm currently planning on Berger 105 Hybrids but would like to get thoughts from forum members.

Thanks for the help.

I'm going to be in the same position as you soon. Calling David Kiff is what I would do. From the research I have done I was thinking along the lines of a .269 neck and .104 freebore.

I would not use a .104 free bore and if you plan to be compete at those ranges at BR. i would turn necks. The free bore diameter i use now is .135 and i did use .155 both will work. PM me and i can set you up so you don't have to buy what some body else just wants to sell….. jim

If you are going to turn necks I would go with a .268" nk. dia. over .269" nk. . I have had both and using the Lapua Blue Box 6BR brass there is just not enough neck thickness to get a nice cut with the .269" neck dia. but with the .268" I would get a nice cut.

I would listen to Rodney and Jim, they know what they are doin. I also switched to a .268 but would like to go to a .267.

I plan to run the same projectile and have a 268 neck with 125 freebore. May be a tad short of freebore, time will tell I guess.

What most people seem to miss is if you are going to jump them or shoot them seated in. If you plan on jumping you need a longer free bore to keep the heel of the boat tail out of the shoulder neck area. Most don't have their own reamers and use what ever the smith has on hand and most of them don't have an optical comparator to know what the free bore length is or what the diameter is also. So beware of the advice you receive, you may not believe me but listen to Rodney and Matt for sure they have been there and done it…….. jim

For the guys shooting tight neck, how much clearance are you running with loaded round? I was shooting 0.2655-0.266 loaded rounds in a 0.269 chamber. Any thoughts?

Interesting discussion.

I have seen everything from .098 to .155 in freebore. The longer the freebore the faster you run out of case length to hold the bullet.
Other than avoiding any possible donut, what is the advantage of the longer length?

I dunno but if all the guys doing the winning are running 130 or longer freebore I guess they are onto something!

Terry I don't think you really need alot of neck to hold a bullet, but I'd bet most are hoping to gain some powder capacity with the longer FB.

I shoot for 3 thousands clearance with a .268" nk. and what ever bullet I am shooting at the time . That way if I get ahold of some "fatter" bullets it's no problem . When I was going for 2 thousands clearance it seems I was eventually ending up with only slightly over 1 thousands clearance and would have to re-turn the necks especially if I switched bullets or loaded a different lot.. Since I've gone to 3 thousands clearanceI've never had to re-turn necks and haven't seen any difference in accuracy. To be completely honest I don't see very much difference in accuracy with my .268" turned neckc and my .271 no-turn Dasher chambers . However, I feel like I have more control and consistency with the .268" nk. so I prefer the .268" nk. reamers.
My 6 Dasher reamers only have .112" freebore and if I wanted to jump a Berger 108 BT more than .030" I would be down close to the neck shoulder junction. Sam Hall runs .124" freeebore with his .268" nk.6 Dasher reamer but Sam will jump bullets more than .030" if he has too. I think if I were having another reamer made I would go .118" freebore.

Seems to me most everybody that shoots 1000 yards and wins a lot with the Dasher is shooting from 135 to 155 freebore. It seems the 600 guys use a little bit shorter freebore. The longer freebore gives less pressure and allows a little more velocity if needed to reach the upper nodes. I shoot both the 105 VLD and 105 Hybrid and with a 15 thous. in I have half the neck left. If you are jumping them they will be in the case farther. Everybody at Williamsport that I know of uses 155 freebore and .266 neck. I tested the Dasher with 1 thous. clearance to 3 thous. clearance and saw no difference in accuracy. It is like Eggman said if you get fatter bullets you are better off with 3 thous. That is what I use and I believe most of the people I know does too. Matt Kline

Great discussion. Would a 87gr Vmax be able to touch the lands with a .135 freebore? I will be primarily shooting 105's but may want to shoot the 87's for varminting as well. Thanks.

I use a .070 freebore with the 75/87 gr. bullets in the Dasher.

You would have to measure the bullets length and compare them,i doubt the 87`s would be able to jamb the lands at .135 freebore, but I`ve been wrong before.
