6 Dasher/Krieger Throat Erosion

My throat has moved forward .105" after 600 rounds, Im running 105 Hybrids and 33.0gr of Varget.

Im quite surprised at this amount of wear in the throat although it is a competition gun so has to shoot 5 shot strings. Is this normal guys or have I been unlucky with a soft barrel?

My barrel diameter is 1.250" parallel and to be honest I never felt like I ever got the barrel seriously hot at all.

Wow... that's pretty extreme in any cartridge save maybe 6x or 6.5x284. I'd certainly bring it to Krieger's attention, see what they might have to say about that particular batch lot of steel.

If you kept a record of what was stamped on the blank's breech end before fitting (I take pictures on mine now, used to take rubbings before phone cameras got so good) they'll need that info.

.105ths one hundred five thousands ? or .0105Ths ten and a half thousands ?

In competition typically with a 1degree 30 minute throat I will see .002 to .003 throat growth. ten shot strings seam to grow at about the same pace as 5 shot strings. so with 600 rounds typically would be about .018 to .024. Plus first 125 shots you will see about.oo8 to about .014 early on then it will slow so total on 600 rounds commonly about .038ths. on a hand full of occasions I have witnessed growth like you have seen from several barrel manufactures & they have been .243 Winchester and .224 caliber 22.250.

Shawn Williams

bore rider type throat I will see about .003 to .006 per 100 shots in my 6mm dashers 7mm or .284 seams slightly less

I've got about 2,000 rounds on a Bartlein Palma barrel. Throat's moved forward all
of 0.022" since it was received back from 'smith late in 2010. Remarkably the Berger 155.5's I like to shoot are every bit as accurate - if not more - jumping 0.042" as when that barrel was new & they were 0.020" off the lands.

If you truly mean 0.105" (one hundred and five thousandths) in 600-rounds, I have to doubt your measurements, since I have never seen that much advancement from any caliber or barrel.
Even half that much in 600-rds I would consider an extreme amount.

No experience with Dasher. 40 yrs of using Kreiger and I've yet to see a bad barrel. When you extend case body for more powder capacity (more flame & heat) then turn around and shorten the neck you are bound to see effects of accelerated throat erosion compared to parent case. That being said your problem seems to be extreme and may be metallurgical in nature. I hope you saved the end cut from your barrel as a few posters have mentioned, so you can discuss with Kreiger. I seriously doubt they've EVER heard of that much erosion in so few rounds :confused:. Just my .02

I measured my dasher throat recently, and after ~450 rounds I measured a .020" change. I measured after chambering and just recently. I got curious and asked some people with more experience than I and they told me it's likely when measured at first I'd hit a burr or it was when the edge of the lands were still sharp. I haven't had to change my load, and the guns still shooting great. So I'm disregarding the measurements.

Have you had to change seating depth, or has your group opened up ?

I see throat erosion in the range that Shawn describes. Are you using the same bullet you did your initial test with? Change lots, brand, method of testing, etc?

If it truly has moved .105' then I would say the throat has moved to another zip code. I have one 6 Dasher barrel that took on about 1700 rounds. The last 300 or so I ran 2000-MR powder and shot it in the 1,000 yard nationals. There was no throat left in the barrel when it shot a 1.86" five-shot there. Honest. Is that typical? I don't think so. I also don't think your throat has moved that far in just 600 rounds unless you clean with lapping compound. It's OK to admit you made a mistake in your calculations.

Thanks for your contributions guys, indeed I had measured wrongly and Im glad to say it has moved 0.025" which is far more like I would have expected and what others have experienced.

I can rest easy :)
