Starting the load development process this weekend…I have 100 pieces of fireformed Lapua cases and am wanting to do a simple charge weight test and shoot some groups prior to doing a seating depth test. I have 105 hybrids and 105 VLD’s. I have Varget and 4895 and plan on using CCI 450’s. A couple questions:
1. What is a good starting charge with 4895 to begin this process? 29.0? Should I move up in .2g increments until I get to 31.0? What about Varget staring charge and range of powder I should run in grains? I know the common nodes that people typically run having read this forum, but I am the definition of a novice when it comes to this stuff and I haven’t been able to find an example of a string of charge weights used to begin testing…I know this range depends on pressure signs, of course, but Just want to make sure I’m not wasting components on doing silly tests…I don’t plan on using a chronograph btw…
2. Is 3 shots per charge weight sufficient enough of a test to find a good charge weight to start doing some seating depth tests or is it worth it to run 5 shots per charge weight?
Thanks for the help, guys.
