6 BRA neck & leade

High Noon

I’m ordering a new 6 BRA finish reamer and was wondering what you guys are currently running on neck and leade. A current print would be very helpful if someone could share.

Thanks!

Question....a .270 would give around .002 clearance on unturned brass and still would allow a slight true up cut for around.003 clearance...does that sound reasonable?

I see leade at .104 up ?

thanks,

On the original print that was published, the freebore diameter is .244. That would have a very slight effect that how long a bullet would be seated at touch, compared to more typical FB dia. Back when the print was first published, I asked Alex why he chose the slightly larger diameter. He told me that it was based on testing.

My VLD barrel runs a 104 FB my Berger 108 barrel has a 120 fb. Both with .268 nk both shoot well.

I was just recently having this conversation. I have at least 12 different BRA reamers. If I include this years pending records, Im up to 16 records on my BRA#1 reamer in the 4 years I have had it. It was the first BRA reamer I spec'd and is still been the one to beat for me, I have a couple others that hold a record and some national wins but none have had the success of the original. Still looking to improve on it, but you wont be held back by it. Some things to note, no part of that reamer was overlooked. Dont shorten the chamber length or tighten the freebore. You can go longer on the freebore but I shortened it on purpose as H4895 likes neck tension. JGS stocks the reamer.

Alex,

What neck size and lead would you recommend today? Could you post your favorite print?

Thanks!

The BRA#1 is a .268 neck with a .104 freebore. Id have to look it up but it is available to the public from JGS. No I do not get a penny from their sales. If you want a no turn just ask for it with a .272 or .273 neck. If you want a varmint version ask for a zero freebore.

....Alex, just one more question, what neck clearance are most running .002 or .003...

Thanks,
High Noon

My 6BR-Ackley has a .272" no turn diameter and zero freebore. That makes it flexible. I have a separate throater with .2438" diameter. I use .080" for Barts 103 Hammers. This has led to the 2019, and 2020 600 yard IBS rookie shooter of the year wins. Gabe Matheny, 2019, Nick Mansfield 2020.

Didn’t see this answered explicitly above, but 270 is not appropriate for no turn. I do what I believe is minimal turn and use a 270 neck. Most, but not all, unturned brass will chamber in it and some will chamber but requires force. I wouldn’t feel safe shooting unturned brass in it.

Go 272 if you want no turn.

Attached is my reamer print. I went with .272 neck.

Waverly
I got the same reamer a few years back and it is great, had Widden make me custom "Neck Size Only" bushing die to complete the set; started out with their full length die... Don't forget to get the "GO" & "NO GO" gauges as well.
