6 Br

Finally got my "Salvage" 6 Br all together.. Picked up a McGowen 8" Twist pre-fit used--have no Idea of the round count.

It seems to want to shoot 70 Gr Sierra's BUT nothing in the 75-95 Gr Range well at all. The 70"s shoot well with N-135 and the 105 A-Max with H-4895. with BR 4's -unfortunately I all but out of them. I have 7 1/2-400,450 and Wolf Magnum's

Any suggestions for powder/bullet-primer combinations for the 75-95 Varget did not work with any of the bullets I tried

Thanx,
Jim

I have an 8 twist Krieger 6 BR. It shoots the Berger 105 VLD's well using Varget and Federal Match primers. This is the only 6BR that I have had experience with. Sure seems like your 8 twist barrel should shoot the heavier bullets well with Varget.

My 8-twist LOVES Berger 80 grain flat base varmint match bullets with 8208-XBR (about 27 grains +/-). I only shoot VFS so high velocity isn't important to me. It would not shoot 87 grain V-maxes; they were all over the paper and key-holing like crazy. No idea why, but it is what it is.

My Shilen 4-groove also shot H322, BLC-2, and Varget with the 80's.

You may have to go to a heavier longer bullet to reach the lands with your 8 twist prefIt.
I own 2 McGowen Savage 6brs prefits one in 12 twist and one an 8 twist.
Both shoot easily in the 2s and 3s as long as I'm doing my part

The reamer they use for the 8 twist has a freebore designed to handle the 105 grain class of bullets. I doubt you are any where near the lands with a 70 grain bullet
Both of mine like it with the bullet touching the lands to leave a mark.
Nothing to loose give the 100 or 105 Bergers a try. If you try the Berger you won't go back

Also have you soaked it real good in a copper removing agent sometimes you can bring a used barrel back to life by getting the copper fouling out

Hippy,
Since your rifle seems to like the 70 gr bullets, might I suggest you test with some 68 gr Bart's Ultras )(FB) being pushed by somewhere around 30 grs of VVN133, IF you are shooting at 100 yds, IF you are shooting beyond 200 yds, stick with the 105 - 107 and try Varget (in the neighborhood of 31 grs). Those work well in my 1:8 Savage Benchrest rifle.

+1 on the 31 gr Varget. That has been the best load with 105s in at least 3 custom barrels I have tuned. But be careful to work up to that. I have a Savage 6BR barrel that will blow primers at 31g with the 105s.

Also agree you will forget the Hornady bullets if you try Bergers. I did extensive comparisons of the two, 87 v-max vs. 80g FB Berger and 105 A-max vs. Berger 105 hybrid. The Bergers win by a large margin. That's not to say the Hornady's can't shoot well, but the Bergers will do better.

I have a shooting buddy (prairie dogs) that always bought the cheapest bullets he could find. "They are half the price," he would say. I asked him why he thought so many people would pay more for other brands of bullets. Think about it. Bullets is one thing that you get what you pay for.

I've had good results with H4895 and any of Fed 205M, CCI 450 or Russian KVB-5.56M (SRM). I'm shooting Berger 105 Hybrids that reliably group less than 1/4 MOA when I check the load at 100. The current combination of H4895 and Fed 205M produced a 450-35X for me in a local 300 yard match. I shot another 450 today but with only 26X as the winds were a little twitchy. Hybrids are seated .016" off the lands.

try 107 smk with 30 gr. of varget and cci 450 primers. watch the 105 amaxs because sometimes they shoot really good and sometimes they don't

+ 1, but mine likes to off the lands a little, up to .030

Agreed, it "should" shoot 105 Bergers, 108 Bergers or 107 smk's with 450 primers and Varget or 8208.

Be careful and start low with 8208 as there are many different lots of it out there with a pretty big variation in max load.

My max load of Varget with 105 Berger in my BAT with a Bartlein is around 30.7. Your results may vary.
