6 BR throat erosion and bbl life

I have a shilen 8 twist Stainless steel barrel and am getting to around 350 rounds. I shoot 105 gr bullets with Varget and limit to 30 gr at the top end. I see no evidence yet of having to extend bullet seating out to match any erosion. Any insight on what the accurate life expectation and erosion rate of a 6 Br is? It must be long relative to a lot of other target rounds. Thanks in advance for your input.

You should be able to get 2000 to 2500 rounds. Erosion varies with kind of barrel and powder and if you shoot hot. Also if you shoot a lot of rounds fast and get the barrel real hot. Usually when they are new they move a little more then settle down and move less on the throat. Matt

I got 2000 rounds down my 8-twist, 4-groove Shilen before I swapped it for a 14-twist. Last group on my sighter was .077 for 3 rounds at the end of a VFS competition. I shot 80 grain FB Bergers with 8208-XBR and got right at 2800 fps. It wasn't hot by any means. I've got 700+ rounds down the 14-twist and see no throat erosion with my Hawkeye; shooting 65-68 grain bullets using LT-32. I've also switched from CCI 450s to BR-4s due to availability. See no difference in accuracy between them.

Doing some practice at 400 yards a while back, I put five into .332" on a tube with 3,800 rounds on it, having burnt Varget and moly-coated Lapua Scenars, though not at "hot rod" velocities (around 2,725). That is far better than I can hold for wind once it starts moving. I do shoot rapid strings also. It proved tops at a club match Sunday with well over 4,000, yet it is showing signs of fading out quickly now. It is a Krieger 1-8 tw. That is exactly what will be going back on. I have found that the cut rifled barrels, as advertised, last much longer. It also depends upon what your expectations are. I would have replaced that barrel long ago if I were using it at top-level events. Many say the best accuracy fades after 1,200 or so rounds. That is not always the case - but surely could be depending upon powder and charge weight. I had a PPC barrel that shot very well but went south after only 500 or so rounds. And I did load it HOT, HOT, HOT.

I have a little over 2000 thru my McGowin,8 twist,bull barrel stainless..
31.2 gr of H4895 AND 68gr bergers..Still shoots in the 190's score at 300 yards..My goal is to see just how many it will take.I log everything..I use foam cleaner and patch..No brush unless it is a nylon..It will do better I know, because I have shot 200 scores with it..I space my shots and try not to get too hot..Keep the carbon ring cleaned out with black powder solvent..
