6 BR reloading problem

Trying to help a friend out. He had a rifle rebarreled with a 6 BR chambered barrel. Loaded some 6 BR Remington brass using Wilson neck and seater dies marked 6 BR Remington with no problems. After firing, the cases will not fit into the dies as they should. Looks like they have expanded in the lower part of the case. What's the problem?

The Wilson inline dies are a very tight fit on Lapua brass even with a minimum spec chamber. If you are running fairly hot loads in Rem brass or have a larger-than-typical chamber the brass may not fit.

First question though--did you full-length size the brass after firing?,You only mentioned having neck and seater dies). If not, get yourself a full-length die from Harrell's, Redding, or Forster and size the brass up. That may be all that's needed to get the brass into the sizer.

If the brass still doesn't fit, try Lapua brass. If that doesn't work, because of an oversize chamber), you can send fired brass to Wilson and they can modify your friend's seater die to fit your fired brass.

If the barrel is one that was chambered in the last couple of years, the reamer was probably designed to fit Lapua brass. These chambers are larger than those that were previously designed for Remington brass. When your new Rem. brass was fired, it simply enlarged to the size of the chamber. Obviously, you are going to need to have your Wilson dies adjusted. The question is whether to wait for a Suitable FL die before having the work done. I would suggest that it is probably not necessary since the largest cases that you will be putting in the neck die and seater are those that have not had the FL treatment. The small reduction in size of your brass from FL sizing should not be a problem, assuming that you order a Harrell die, and have sent a fired case in with your order. The dies cost $70, and are a bargain at that. In the case of the cases that you send to Wilson, and Harrell's, I would make sure that they were fired more than once, neck sized only, with a stout load, keeping your locking lugs well greased, so that you have examples of the largest brass that your rifle will produce.

He is using Remington brand brass, not Lapua. He did not full length size after firing and doesn't really want to have to go thru that step every time to use the Wilson dies for loading. Never had to do that with PPC guns and dies.

What does Wilson charge to modify dies? Are their current dies made for Norma, although marked Remington???)?

So maybe he has an early set of Wilson dies that are really for 6 BR Remington chambers and not 6 BR Norma?

I notice however, that some dies for the 6 BR are still designated 6 BR Remington. Why is this? Sure seems confusing.

What should brass fired in a BR Norma chamber measure after firing?

Boyd, even if the gun was chambered for Lapua brass, the fired Rem brass should fit in the Wilson Die. Wilson is producing its dies to meet Lapua specs. That's why I think the guy has a "generous" chamber, probably in the back end.

Personally, I'd get the full-length die. I don't think neck-sizing only is that much of a time-saver, and if one wants to shoot this cartridge,or PPC for that matter), to its potential, then a FL-die is called for.

Before u start buyin all sorts of things u dont need...why dont u measure the fired case at the .200 line....see just how big they are....they usually start out around .468" and swell to .470 after a coupla fireings....if they are much bigger than that,,,they have swelled due to excess pressure or toooo big of a chamber....are ur primer pokets loose??? have u been blowing primers....are they hard to extract??? ....it is important for the brass,,dies,,reamer,,,chamber,,to be matched,,,no matter what the cal....
I am guessin that ur wilson seater is for the old style Rem brass with the smaller base line....just make a lil wire loop,.030" wire..) and put a coil of it in the seater base...it will move the die up the case and give u a little wiggle room...this is a quik fix that works when ur in a pinch...give it a try.......If all else fails get a Redding type S full length sizer....that usually fits the modern chambers....unless they are wallered out in the bak and tooo big for stuff that is made rite.....measure and check everything....Roger

Before firing Remington 6 BR brass measures .469" and fits properly into Wilson neck or seater die, base of case flush with bottom of die). After ONE firing, mild load), case measures .473" and when inserted into die, base protrudes 1/4" below die base.
