6 BR coyote rifle what load?

I am Having a Kimber Montana rebarreled to 6 BR Norma with a #2 Shilen SS 1-8 twist at 20" long threaded for my suppressor. I intend to use this as a coyote rifle. What bullet and powder/loads do you think I should use. Most of my shots will probably be under 300 yards, most likely 50-150.

Oh yea, I know someone is going to ask if I care about the fur. I would prefer not to tear them up, but not too worried about it. I have some 17's and 20 cals for fur if the price ever gets good again.

Try the Sierra 80 grain Varminter bullets #1515. I have shot a few coyotes with a 6mm x 45 using these bullets at 3000fps and they have been fur friendly.

70 Gr. Nosler BT is a great bullet for Coyotes in the 6 BR. I have a couple of 6 BR rifles set up with that bullet and it has worked extremely well for me. I have used that bullet for over 20 years in cartridges from the .243 AI all the way down to the 6X45. It expands rapidly but the solid base keep on driving . Killed many Groundhogs, Coyotes and Bobcats with it. It is very accurate also.....I get around 3275 fps in a 22" barrel using IMR 8208 XBR .

I have had great luck with my 6 Dasher shooting the 87 V-max bullet with Varget and a CCI-450 primer. 22" barrel running about 3000 fps. If you place the shot behind the shoulder or straight on chest shot it is very fur friendly. I have made clean kills over 500 yds with this load. Good luck and shoot straight! :D:D

Dan, with a 20" snout, you are somewhat handicapped to begin with and you need all the speed you can get.

With a 20" barrel, you are going to unzip a lot of coyotes between 225-325 yards with heavy bullets if you sight in at 100. It would probably be prudent to sight in at 200 which will put you around 1.75" high at 100 depending on what bullet you shoot.

With the 8T, your gunsmith probably set you up for 105's using .105 freebore, and that will be a MAJOR factor on your bullet choice also.

You probably will not be able to touch the lands with a 70g Nosler. A 87g V max would be a good place to start, and accuracy will not be a problem.

Good luck!

I talked to the gunsmith and he is going to throat it .040". I usually zero 1" high at 100, so I am hoping to be on or 1" low at 200. I will probably use 55-75gr bullets. I hardly shoot past 300 while coyote hunting, usually 50-150. For colony varmints, I will use my longer, heavier barreled 6BR's.

.040 freebore will be just about right for the 70 Gr. Nosler BT and if you sight in 1" high at 100 yds. you will be right on at 200 yds. depending on exactly how high your scope is above the line of bore and your velocity. That's the way I set mine up and you should be about 2 1/2" low at 250 yds. and 6" low at 300 depending on your exact velocity. I think you will be very pleased with the choices you have made for freebore and sight in . Let us know which bullet you decide on and how it does for you.

Dan,

For many years I sighted in at 1.5" high at 100 yds. Usually puts you dead on at 200 or so and about -3" low at 250. So, if you aim mid chest, with a broadside shot you should be good. If you range a coyote at 300, hold just along top of the back and it will drop into the boiler room. Easy to remember, and has been the demise of just over 400 coyotes for me so far. Good luck and shoot straight!! :D:D

Dan,
I like the 87gr Vmax, with a stuff load of Varget. They may be hard on fur. Also I like 70 gr. Sierria Blitzking, with N135.

I will give them a try, the 55's, 70's, and even the 87's.

Paul, I will try your 1.5" zero. Funny thing I remember missing a bobcat at about 15' once. I aimed dead center chest and shot right under it. :) I forgot at that range you have to aim 1.5" high.

Savage 110S with a new Shaw 6MM Rem 1-10T barrel, 24"-- 55 gr NBT bug eye groups 100 yrds, 58 gr Hornady did not shoot quit as good, but acceptable!! Death on groundhogs at any range!! It also likes the 70 gr TNT and the 80 NBT! You should be very please with the short throat and the light bullets!
Let us know how it do!!
Merry Christmas all!!

The Nosler 55 lead free are as long as the 70-80 grain bullets . They explode inside the coyote at your ranges. "Most of myshots will probably be under 300 yards, most likely 50-150" I get 3700 fps with great accuracy.
