6 BR brass question

I just bought a 6BR that was just built. Apparently the reamer that was used was based on Remington specs. I wanted to use Lapua Brass but it appears that I may not be able to do that since Lapua has a bigger case base. Is that fact? So where do I buy Remington 6 Br brass. I can't find it. I would also like suggestions as to the dies I should buy. You help would be greatly appreciated by this rookie to the 6BR.

First, get a Lapua case and see if it will in fact chamber.

If it doesn't send it back to the smith and tell him to get a current reamer and touch up the chamber. Any competent smith would chamber for Lapua brass unless the customer specifically requested smaller dimensions.

Since we launched this website in 2004 there has been plenty of info on 6BR chambering for Lapua brass. A smith that uses an ancient Rem brass reamer has had his head in the sand.

You might also want to take into consideration which weight of bullet you will be using in order to have the throat reamed to give you the clearance if you are using the 100+grains that alot of shoot out of fast twist bullets. He should of used a modern reamer as rem brass has not been available for quite some time as far as I know.My gun in 6 mmbr was chambered in the late eighties and is considered an antique by some, however it was chambered as a no turn neck and sey up for lapua brass. Hope this helps.

The original 6BR Remington was dimensioned to give best accuracy with lighter bullets at short ranges. Besides the base diameter (which could be insignificant), it had a shorter neck (OAL 1.520 instead of 1.560), a different lead in angle (3 deg, instead of 1.5 deg), and of course a slower twist for shorter bullets. See this links for additional info.

Are planning this gun for short range or long range use? Does it have a fast twist? You may want to think that through before you jump in.

I expect you will be able to use Lapua brass, but if the chamber is dimensioned to the original Remington spec, you will have to shorten them 0.040". The gunsmith should be able to tell you for sure what neck length you have. I like Forster dies, and use the Bushing/Bump die for sizing, and the Ultra Micrometer die for seating. Both should work with either chamber.

The 6mm BR case made by Remington is a seasonal item. I just emailed Remington and inquired about when they expect to start shipping the cases to places like Midway and Midsouth (and Powder Valley.) If you can't wait there are a couple of things you can do without altering your rifle. One, you can run the Lapuna brass through a small base body die like the one that Redding sells. Or you can simply run a 7mm BR case through a sizing die for the 6mm BR. Doing this you may have to turn down the case neck but if your rifle has a tight neck you will have to do this anyway. Since it is now spring I would expect Remington to be shipping the 6mm BR primed cases shortly.

Tommygun,

Your question got me to thinking....I called Cooper Firearms who is building me a 6MM BR and asked them if I would be able to use Lapua brass which is my druthers and they said yes as well as Norma and Remington. I guess it all boils down to the reamer being used.

I just received word from Remington that they will not be producing the 6mm BR cases!! :'( Good thing that I have over 1,000 of them on hand (not for sale!)
