6 BR brass problems

I have two 6 BR rifles one in 1/8 twist, and my new 1/14 twist that I had built with a different reamer. The one in 1/14 I'm just going to use for a Coyote rifle and I don't need much brass for it, so I took 20 pieces of brass from my 1/8 rifle, and tried to used them in my new 1/14 knowing they wouldn't chamber or chamber hard. They chambered real hard but I got them fired thinking that once fired they would fireform to my new chamber. They don't! They are still thicker in the web area [five thousands] and if I try to push them back far enough to squeeze the web in with my Redding Body Die, I push the shoulder back too far. Why can't I fireform to my new chamber? Should I just use new brass and solve the problem? Any help will be appreciated.

Trying to size the brass with the chamber won't work since you can never make the brass smaller than the chamber and it will want to spring. I see that you have 2 options. Your first option is to buy some new brass and just use it for the new gun. Your second option is a 'small base body die' and Redding makes one for the 6BR - $34.31 from Midsouth. This will re-size the base of the case to smaller than SAMMI specs. Hope that helps.

I believe the SAMMI web dia. is .4709, so you could use a 444 Marlin die to resize the web. I do that on all my 308/30-06 based wildcats.

I had the same problem in an older chamber using Lapua brass. Remington brass works perfect. I was getting score marks on the base of the Lapua case. They were hanging up just below where a sizer die stops sizing. I simply chucked them up in a drill press and removed .001' from the base. I bet the Redding small base die would not work in my application and simply oversize my cases. They chamber OK now...still super light score marks midway on the case, but I polish them each time after reloading and seems to work fine.

ridgeway,

The 6Br and 6PPC are two rounds that there are 50 different chamber sizes. THe Remington 6BR chamber is smaller in the butt than the Lapua, sometimes no amount of sizing will make it fit. Sometimes the Smallbase die will work.

Thekaiser,
Sometimes the brass will not work with the same reamer. You may F/L and push the shoulder back enough the fit the chamber and fireform again, but I would get some new brass.

I was just saying in my application, I doubt the small base die will work. Maybe I got lucky on the chamber size that I can make the Lapua brass work. :) I also had to trim the Lapua case OAL to chamber as well.
