6.8 SPC opinions

Just got offered a 6.8 upper and really don't know much about these. Have looked at past threads but there is really not much on loads newer than 16/17'
We've got some additional powders now and was wondering what you guys have found that works... 16 or 18" barrel, can't recall!

AA 2200 for 100 gr and heavier. R10 and H322 for lighter. 6.8 seems to suffer less in 16-18" barrels than some other calibers. I had one for several years for hogs, but never got to go.
There is a throated chamber that can be loaded a little hotter. Check to see what you have.

Maybe not. Hornady lists several powders and I expect other manuals do too. They don't even list AA 2200. Maybe that was about the time AA was deciding to make 2200 data powder into a regular canister product.DSC00063.JPG

AA2200 is one of the best powders for the 6.8 across most of the common bullet weights. A lot of the manuals don't list it, but it works great.
RL-7 is also a good powder for the lighter weight bullets. My best load for the 90 grain Speer Gold Dots is 29.6 grains of RL-7 and a CCI 41 primer.

I have built two 24" 6.8s for long range silhouette and have been shooting them for the last 5-6 years with excellent results. H335 is my go to powder for the 110bthp or 110SGK. I have also shot h335 with 110s in an 18" upper and everything cycled fine and was plenty accurate. I also tested out BLC2 with 120gr solid copper match bullets. Worked well enough. RL10 does good too. 4198 is fine for 90gr and less.

H4198 worked nice for me with 110 gr hornady match
H322 did ok with the same.
My hunting load i want to try is 130 gamekings with 27.5 gr reloader 10x. Shoots good, velocity should be near 2400 out of my 16”

Go to the 6.8 forum. Lots of good info there. The 6.8 has lost a little luster as the 6.5 Grendel has been riding the 6.5 creedmoor band wagon. AA200 is the most popular powder and produces the most velocities in 100 and 120 gr bullets. Western lists data. It is temp sensitive so be careful with warm loads worked up in cooler weather shooting in warmer temps.

Found an odd piece of brass at the range. 6.8 SPC?? Did a little research. LOTS of info on AR's but not much on bolt guns. Didn't want to modify my AR SO, built one on a Savage action. Love it!!
A little bigger than a .223 and a little smaller than a .308.
Went with the standard 6.8 SPC rather than the SPC II. Shorter throat so I could jam my lighter bullets. Turned out to be a bug hole maker. A little holdover for 400+ yards will get hits every time.
Start with the lightest bullets I can get my hands on, jammed into the lands, and go heavier as the throat wears. Lots of folks say the selection of .270 (6.8) bullets is left wanting? Better do some checking before running your mouth!!
Took my 30 + year old Grand Son out and showed him what a REAL bug hole maker does compared to his wanna be AK shooter friends. He was IMPRESSED to
say the least. Don't think he's ever fired an "accurate" bolt gun. As far as FPS? Never bothered to check. They're all going in damn near the same hole so why bother.
