6.5x55AI velocity?

Have been using 142gr SMK in my 22" bbl 6.5x55ai, 50gr N160, being pushed at 2840fps - no real pressure signs.

Am wanting to switch over to 123gr Amax (usable on fur as well as targets), have got a load of 51gr N160, being pushed at 2980fps. Any pointers at what others are getting velocity wise from using the 123 Amax, and how close am I getting to max loading with VV N160?

Again I am not seeing any real pressure issues at the moment, but am aware that with an AI, pressure signs can sometimes be a bit masked?

Accuracy is the usual Swede brilliance!!

Is your 6.5x55 AI on a modern action, or a 98? If it is you should be able to get more velocity out of the 142's, I can push 139 scenars at 3,100 fps out of mine without pressure signs. I only shoot 139 scenars and maybe the new 140 berger hybrids out of mine so I can not give you data on smaller bullets.

Got a question for you guys. I see you are using 50 grs of N160 pushing a 142 SMK. Are those VLD targets? I've been testing some 140 Berger VLD's with N160 and been down in the mid 40's (44 - 45 grs) with N160 and not happy with the groups. Now my 6.5 X 55 is not AI and my barrel is 26". But now I'm wondering if I should boost my powder load up as I'm chasing accuracy per se and not even worrying about velocity at this point. Any suggestions? Thx!

I shoot the BJ version, and easily exceed 6.5x284 velocities with less powder. I won't list loads on a public forum, but use NORMA powders.

My rifle action is a Sako 75.

Guessing I could increase charge a bit until I see some pressure signs. Would be interested in what other users consider a max in this combination?

Any of you fellows ever try N560 with the 139-142gr bullets? That is the powder I used to achieve velocities at what wwbrown is reporting. Twist rate of the barrel may(?) be a limiting factor though. JMHO. WD
