6.5x55 with SMK 142 what kind of velocity can typically be safely obtained?

I am seriously considering building a 6.5x55. I have read that some claim very high velocities with this cartridge and the SMK 142. The official published loads seem to be around 2500fps and I see people claim they safely get 2900fps safely.

Any pointers on what I can safely expect to get out of a modern 6.5x55 would be appreciatted. Also what kind of velocity gain could I expect if I go Ackley Improved?

Thanks

Hi
Try a search on here for comments by "Rhino" who has posted sensibly about most this 6.5 swede (amongst others) ... tho not for a while.

Utah,
Much depends on your barrel, receiver, and brass. I will say that with my Rem 700, 30" Pac-Nor 3 groove stainless SM barrel, and Lapua brass, I am over 2900 using RL-22 under the Lapua 139 currently, though I used to use the 142SMK with the same velocities. No idea about the Ackley version.

The published velocities are very low due to the original loadings for small ring Mausers being in the 40,000 psi range, and Sierra for a long time used an 18" barrel in their manual. I have a Win. Model 70 with a 26" barrel, 48 grs. of H 4831 behind a Lapua 139 gr. naked Scenar gives me 2,875 fps. Re 22, being a double based powder will go faster, but I don't want to push it.

This will be going on a Stiller Tac 300 action with a Bartlein barrel. I think if I can safely hit 2950 in the 6.5x55 I will call it good and not mess around with Ackley improved.

Anyone try Reloader 17 with this?

edited - I missed the post above with the reloader 17. Looks like I should be good to go.

Mine is a pac nor 3 groove 28", 2997 fps 142 mk over 49.5 gr VV165, you should have no problems getting 2900+. VV165 and MRP/RL22 are the best options for those velocities.

I have a sporterized Model 96 Swede Mauser that I left the original 29" barrel on it. With a max load for the small ring Mauser 96 action of 45 grs of AA4350 I get a touch over 2800 fps with the 140 Sierra. I would say with a modern action and a 28 to 30" barrel you should be able to get over 2900 fps safely.
