6.5x55,or 57) repeater

Anybody know the COL of a 6.5x55 or 6.5x57 with something
like a 130 gr. Barnes Triple-Shock or Swift Scirocco in it
loaded so that the base is ahead of the neck-shoulder junction?

I have the feeling I'm only subjecting myself to some torture
here 'cause I know I'll be too long for a Remington short
action box and probably short for a long action box.

Any advice from any fans of these cartridges as to what I
could use as the base for a nice hunting rifle for one of
these cartridges?

thanks,

robert

yes the short action will be short for a repeater.Besides the TSX and the scirocco are rather long bullets.

You have to go with a long action... but it is not "too long". It will just work.

Any long action would do. You want to go cheap: just buy an old m38 swedish mauser and change the stock and trigger. It won´t shoot BR groups but will work for hunting, although you have to be careful not to use too hot loads.

Apart from that, i guess you can go with any action you want.

Hansen in Norway makes a medium action, precisely in between a short and a long action, especific for this size of cartridges.

Good luck.

if you want to get acceptable accuracy usea 6.5x57 short throater the regular german design is more than 0.7 inch of lead and most 6.5x57 accuracy are ?????

I use a JGS 6.5x57 regular reamer, CIP ) reworks with a 0.2 lead set at 0.2643 with a throat angle of 2° that works fine with modern bullets I have nver try horrors from RWS or any slug maker, but Nosler, Sierra, Hornady work very fine

6.5x55 can be help to with a lead throat rework

if you plan to use a Rem 700 long why not go with 6.5/06 or 6.5/270 Win ?

good shooting

I'd probably go with a Borden. Jim's nice to do business with
and, with the Borden Bumps, I can still get the tight tolerances
at lock-up without having a super tight-fitting bolt.

OTOH, do you have any pointers on the Hansen action? I'm not
sure how I'd get it here to the States, but it'd be worth
looking into. Are they a good action?

Either way, I'd have JGS make up a reamer. If I go 6.5x55, I'll
spec it for Lapua brass, for the 6.5x57, I'd go with RWS brass.

I didn't want to start with an '06-based case as I'd probably
wind up just being too long for a long action box then. But
then, I haven't looked at any of the measurements to see just
how long a box I could get for a long action.

Thanks for the info,

robert

I have one of the 700 Classics that is chambered for the 6.5 X 55, and Remington built these rifles with a long action. I have been shooting it with some of the Federal Premium loads that use the Nosler 140gr. Partition, that came with the rifle when I bought it. These are loaded to the SAAMI length of 3.150", and will shoot consistent 3/4", 3 shot groups at 100 yards from the bench. These rounds fit into the magazine easily, and from what I can tell, these bullets are close to having the base of the bullet even with the neck/shoulder junction. Swift shows the 140gr. A-Frame bullet as seating even with the shoulder/neck junction while it is loaded to the SAAMI length for the Swede. This bullet is 1.245" long, but in the copy of the Swift manual that I have, they do not show the 130gr. Scirocco, so I am not able to give you further information. I would imagine that if you contacted the good folks at Swift, they would have the information readily available for you. I hope this information will help you.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine
