6.5x47L Substitute powders RL19, Norma 204

There are 2 powders you need to try for 140 class bullets. 1.) H4350... This is BY FAR the best powder for that class of bullets.. I know it is hard to find too. 2.) The second powder for the 140's is VV N550... It too is difficult to find. Now here is a "substitute powder" that has been found to be GREAT in some 6.5 x 47's, however, I have found it to be "so-so".. But it is available and could prove to be very good in your rifle.. It is IMR 4007.. Very clean burning, just a shade faster than H4350 and available!!

If N550 works I would assume Power Pro 2000mr would work also.

I am currently loading up for that powder as we write.. I have not shot it yet, however, it's burn rate would appear to be correct for both 130's as well as 140's... I hope it works.. I will soon find out... I thought it might work in my 6mmDasher>>>but it was terrible... Way too new of a powder to KNOW what it will work in... "Try and see" at this point... But it would seem to be very appropriate..

RL-19 COULD be a good powder>>> But I, myself, would not use it as I use my 6.5 x 47 for competition. RL-19 is about as dirty as burning charcoal in your barrel. I would run out of accurate loads BEFORE I ran out of competition shots.. But if you do not intend to compete, the RL-Powders (of any designation) are accurate and almost always show excellent e.s.'..

Could you share your 140 Gr load with H4350. Sitting on the fence with a new barrel--260 Rem or 6.5x47L.

I used to shoot the Berger 140gr LRBT's in my first 6.5 x 47. I would have to go back and look up the EXACT load, however, I know it was either 41.0 or just north of that, like 41.3 or somewhere in there, less than 42.0grs. Now that was a GREAT load, and I shot a 5 shot group that was, I believe .437 @ 300 yards. But the thing about that group was the FIRST 4 shots were in .111inches. The last (5th shot) opened it up. I have NEVER shot a 5 shot group in the .300's or below at 300 yards, and I thought, looking at the first 4 shots, I might get it!! BUT I blew it... But that load usually shot somewhere between 0.75" and 1.25" almost all the time. Sometimes it would do better, rarely would it do worse.. That load shoved the 140's out just a tad over 2800f.p.s. Like I said, I would have to go back and search my notes to find out the particulars of that load..

Sorry, it just came to me... It was 40.1grs of H4350 and a CCI BR2 primer...

Natchez had RL17 & RL25 last week, even 5lb jugs. I would of posted it, but there were a handful of guys whining about those types of posts last fall. I'm looking everyday and see stuff, do you guys want to know about it?

All you listed I can't find I did see 4007 how about RL19 seems the same as n550

fm, I may get flamed for this, but RL17 seems closer to N550 to myself. RL19 is right below 550 on the burn rate chart, but 17 is a dual based higher energy powder like 550, and exhibits the same type of performance, maybe even better!

My charges between the two vary very little in a 6.5x47. That sentence looks stupid. ;)

Please report your findings on here. I'd be interested to see what kind of velocity your getting.

If someone see's powder or other items that we seem to be looking for I say post it, we are a shooting family. That is my OP, let the whiners cry somewhere else. Most are here to help and learn.

I have a 300 yard F-Open competition this Sunday... I am going to use my 6.5 x 47 so testing will begin next week for that powder... Let's see and hope!! But I will report on my findings..

Well I just looked up the forecast for Sunday. A L-O-W of 56 with a H-I-G-H of 72 / winds 5-10m.p.h. which is relatively calm here in the winter>>>IF you want to call those temps "winter"!! LOL!! However, you are MORE THAN WELCOME to come on down and enjoy a break from the cold and enjoy some REAL "southern hospitality" as only TEXANS can show to their brother shooters!!

Well Thank You the invitation sounds really great, maybe I will make it some time whats the name of the club and the town.

Our club is called "Bayou Rifles"... If you did want to come down here, you could stay at my humble abode. I have a sizable townhome with a lot of space and a comfortable guest bedroom, complete with a full bathroom / shower etc.. That is a standing invite to anyone who would like to visit our club for a shoot..
