6.5x47L Flash hole

I was reading some posts awhile back and remember coming across something along the lines of opening up the flash holes on 6.5x47 brass for different powders? A buddy shoots a 6.5 and seams to be having problems tuning it. I was looking for some insight..Anyone heard of that?

Hey Dan,

Back on 06 when I was shooting the 6.5x47 I played around opening up the flash holes and never found any improvement in accuracy. Next year I'll be chambering another one and I plan on sticking with the ppc flash hole.

I have found 6.5 x 47L to be very easy to tune, I have developed two loads for 600 yard F-class shooting and the first took me 70 rounds starting w/ no experience with the round. 1500 rounds I was out of Varget and got a load with RL-15 that shoots as well or better,197 out of 200 the last trip out) in 45 rounds.

Is something else possibly wrong with the gun?

Just my two cents,

Have worn out 3 Krieger barrels and set some national records with my un-modified 6.5 Lapua.

Small flash hole works for me.

I load with Wolf primers, Varget and Berger 130's.

Dantiff asked: 'How many rounds down the tube before you replaced?'

My answer might not necessarily apply to all, but should give most a range of expectations depending upon their discipline.

For F Class, where up to 10 or more sighters plus 20 shots for record can make a barrel blistering hot...up to three times a day!... you can expect your 'competitive' 6.5L barrel to start slinging an unwelcome 'flipper' along-about 1800 rounds. We're talking about serious long range competion here, where an unexplained 9, or worse yet, an 8, could be instant death. This from a barrel that had a load capable of sub 1/4 moa...that's under 1/2' groups at 200y and if you're not into that zone, the big dogs will grab the bone!

I have one barrel, used now for breaking in new brass, that has over 3200 rounds. It still groups nicely under 1/2 moa, but not good enough for comp.

I gave a friend a 30' formerly 'hummer' barrel that had about 2200 rounds. He cut it back 1', rechambered to 260 Rem, and started shooting 2' groups at 600y with it.

So.

For competition, retire the 6.5L barrel at 1800 rounds. For hunting or just having fun, you could go on for another 2-3000 rounds.
