6.5x47 & Light Pills

Anyone having much luck with the 107/ 108 class bullets in their 6.5X47? Would be for paper punching/ clay breaking at 400 yards max. I have lots of Varget (and a little RE-15) & am thinking about giving it a shot. Looking for a lighter recoil load than the 130/ 140 @ 2,850 FPS that I currently run. Maybe a 108 Scenar at 3,100 FPS would do the trick? My barrels are 8 & 8.5 twist from 22" to 28-1/2" LNG, .123" FB reamer.

Success stories and/ or cautionary tales appreciated.

Thanks!

I have had good luck with 107 grain sierra matchkings using 36.5 grains of Rl-15 or the same amount of varget. I don't know the velocity. The gun is a savage with a 26" criterion barrel with a 1-8 twist. I use it for the sames reasons you are thinking about. I only have access to a 200 yard range and for me the combination works well. There was a post a week or so ago about using 95 grain bullets that I thought would be fun to try.

Might try this load of 8208 and Scenars.

It been great for me.

I even shoot it suppressed.

This is from a 22" Krieger AR-10.

I consider it low recoil as well.

Thanks, guys. My 108 Scenars are in, brass is in route back from DJ's (annealed and ultrasonic cleaned) and it looks like a rain-free weekend. Hope to have something to report next week.

I'm shooting the 85 gr Sierras in my 6.5x47L -8Tw, with Varget.
Getting nice tight groups.

I tried 108 Scenars yesterday with RE-15 & BR-4s, jumping them .02" in my Brux 8.5 Twist, 23" BBL, 1-1/4" straight.

Started at 35.0gr and worked up to 40.5gr in .5 grain increments. First shot a composite group (1 of each charge) at 200 yards to know where to adjust the elevation/ look for pressure. Looked promising at first as there was a decent node from 35.0 to 37.5gr and a real nice node from 38.0 to 39.5. 40 impacted way high and 40.5 was back down again. Both showed a little pressure, so I didn't shoot groups with those.

In the end, the best 4 shot groups at 200 yards were a little bigger that 1/2 MOA. Not going to cut it & not even promising enough to tinker with seating depths. I give up.

I have had no luck with RL15 in any of my 20"-26" 47L AR guns ever. Seems like it should work with the lighter pills, but not for me to this point.

In fact, the XBR8208 I use in 47L was a carryover learned from load experiments conducted with the 6.5 Grendel, using 100, 108, 120 & 123 grain pills. Worked good with Grendel, so I tried it in 47L with good results.

Might try another powder.

Good luck!
