6.5x47 Lapua to 6x47 Lapua

I am new to this forum and for the most part new to reloading. My dad passed away a year ago and I acquired his extensive amount of reloading equipment and supplies. My dad would buy a weapon, work up a load, shoot it for awhile and then sell the weapon to start the process all over again. He enjoyed this to no end.

I differ to my dad in that I do not want to own a lot of different weapons and calipers. I now own a couple of .22s, a 17HMR, a 223 AR, a custom made tactical .308 and a 300 WM.

Right now the 308 is complete. I want to put a 6x47 Lapua barrel on her. I own no dies or brass. I do have an ad in the classified looking for these items.

My question is what all do I need to reload the 6x47 Lapua? I will most likely use VV N-550 powder, Berger 88gr Varmint bullets. This will be a varmint weapon for coyote, bobcat, wolf and bear. I want the equipment needed to build BR quality rounds even if I am not going to be BR shooting.

Sorry for the long wind.

Semper Fi,
Tony

The 6x47 Lapua is a little touchy about how it shoots reloads, as new as you are I would consider the 6.5x47 Lapua instead.
Either way a set of FL bushing dies from Redding will allow you to load either one without a problem.
Not sure if i would be wanting to stick a 88 grain bullet in a bear either !!!!!
A 140 Hunting VLD out of the 6.5 is a whole new ball game, and the bear will not like it one little bit....

Preacher, I agree with you 100 percent on the bears but 140 grain is a little hard on coyote skin. LOL I will be running with two guns the other being a 12ga with #4 shot. We will have to see.

Please go into a more detailed description of a "little touchy about how it shoots reloads".

Thanks as always,
Tony

Bears are not going to like #4 buckshot either 'O)
It just seems like most of the 6x47 Lapua's are a PITA to get to shoot, I worked on 2 of them for a long while and finally just pulled the barrels because they never shot like they should, as quick as they should, with 2 different makes of barrels...
I also load for 22x47's--25x47's 6.5x47's & 6.5 x47 Ackleys and don't have a problem with them... it's just the 6x47

+100 on the Preacher's post. In my experience, the 6x47 is a "why do I beat my head against the wall? Because it feels good when I stop" round.

I'm pulling the barrel later in the week. I know when I'm beat. :'( Barrel, dies & brass will be in the ads shortly thereafter.

Sorry to hear that hogpatrol. Keep me in mind when you get ready to sell.

Not all 6x47L's are bad. Yes you do hear about some. But everyone that I have had personal experience with guns or shooters, have had awesome performance.

On a second note, I do not feel they are inheritly as accurate as the 6br or 6 dasher. But they are not impossible to get to shoot. You cannot just throw 32.5 grains of Varget into the case, with a 105 grn VLD into the lands and expect it to shoot 1/4 moa.

For components I use a Forster microseater die and fl sizer. This works great for me but I do wish I would have initially purchased a Redding FL Type S bushing die for a 6.5x47 and just purchased the proper bushing to neck it down to a 6mm. You would kill two birds with one stone. You will commonly find the powder of choice is H4350 but others will work with good results as well, 550, varget, RL17, etc. I only shoot the 105 VLD's and have had great results. I do think the 87 grain v-MAX's or 88 grn bergers would also perform very very well.

The only 6x47L that I owned shot extremely well
with H4350 and 107 Sierras jumping them .005
in a 1 in 8 twist Schneider. It would shoot in the
low 1s LDS
