6.5x47 lapua reloading info wanted

recently aquired a 6.5x47 project was wondering what has been working for you guys? bought some 123g scenars, 130g vlds and some 120g amax bullets. looking to use re 15 but any suggestions would be welcome. 26" 1-8 twist barrel

ive been using the following with acceptable results:

123 grain a-max moly coated bullets
41 grains of Vihtavuori N-550 (this might be too hot for uncoated bullets, so work up your load)
COL: 2.738
cci br primers

using a 26" 1-9 barrel

I use 40.0 gr. N550 with 139 gr. Scenars, a friend of mine uses 41.0 gr. N550 with the 130's. So I would think with the 123's you should be just above 41.0 gr. N550. ***WORK UP TO THESE LOADS!***

I run 41gr of H-4350 with 142smk's. I would say since you have an 8tw you may as well go with the heavier 6.5 bullets. The 130's will buck the wind much better than any of the 120 class bullets. 37.5 grs of Varget is a pretty common load with the 130's if you want to try it, plus it will be much more temp stable than R-15.

I run the 142's because I would have to get another 150fps out of the 130 bergers in order to get any kind of wind advantage. I also run the smk's because I am not to fond of vld's and over the years I have found that no matter how good of a load I have with vld's they never seem to be as good at 100yds as a tangent ogive bullet. It may just be because I am impatient when developing a load or something to that affect, but I have made valiant attempts at getting them to shoot as well and always seem to have fliers here and there sooner or later.

My 25" 8.5T Krieger was IMO a slow one. I only ever shoot or even tried 130VLD's. CCI 450's for primers, RL15 never worked, Varget was good But nothing shot like H4350. 42.1g only got me 2860fps though while others were reporting a bit higher velocity's for similar loads.This load was wee bit hot but 100 cases wore out the barrel. I had to add the powder slow and still got a crunch now and then when seating bullets. More powder didn't shoot better and was harder to maintain seating depth.

lmorrison17, you wore out the barrel with 100 rounds?

No, I think what he meant is he 100 cases were enough to wear out the barrel. If you get 2,000 rounds out of a barrel, you would have to reload the brass 20 times.

Bottom line, he got excellent brass life eventhough it was a hot load.

Thanks for the info everyone, I have a 6.5-284 that I shoot the 140's through. Wanted to use a 123-130 class bullet in this for 800 and less distances. We have a tactical match here in montana every month with the core of the shooting done between 300-850 and the 6.5-284 works great but do to a couple of 8 round string stations I think the 6.5x47 would be a better application in that environment. This is a a savage platform for testing this theory thus keeping costs down for experimenting. But then again I will probably have one built if I works like I think it will! Thanks again jeff.

I'm going to jump in here a little late. First, I'd trust anything Eric has to say about the -47. With that said, my load is 40.25 to 40.8 gr of H4350 (different lots), Berger 130 VLD and CCI 450's. I use the Redding Type-S FL Bushing die with the .289" bushing for .001" neck tension, seated .010" into the lands. I followed Jason Baney's 1000 yd load development system and this combo beat out the 123 MK and Varget. I've since shot several .5 MOA 1000-1011 yd groups. Other than initial brass prep, I've never felt the need to trim my brass; only anneal about every 4th firing. With the 40.25 gr I was getting around 2800 fps. When I ran out of the first lot it took 40.8 gr to re-obtain the accuracy and yet the velocity went up to about 2860 fps. I just checked a 20 shot string 3 days back and was only getting around 2830. I checked my throat wear and it's the same at 1200 rounds as it was at 700 rounds. Still scratching my head over this one.

Oh yeah, 26" Krieger 1:8.5tw. And I haven't cleaned my barrel since around round 200-300. :o
