6.5x47 Lapua Project

I'm seeking advice on a build I want to start. I want a rifle in 6.5x47 Lapua. I plan on using it for long range shooting and hunting. For barrel length, I'm leaning towards 28". For twist rate, I've read good things about 1 in 8 twist to cover a broad variety of bullet weights, but I am definitely open to advice! For stock I am looking at the style of a McMillan A5 type. I'd also like advice on optics. I prefer FFP. Looking forward to hearing from you guys!! 😁

I'm building a 6x47 I'm going 28" in a Mausingfield action in a Manners T4A. I just built my brother a 6.5, 8" twist throated for the 140 grain Berger hybrid. I have a couple of the Burris XTR2 scopes coming, I have a buddy that is very happy with them, and just over a $1k there not wallet killers. Yeah it's not a Razor hd or NF atctr but it's not $2500+ either.

Swat I have a 26in 8twist Bartlein barrel. It pushes 123Scenars at 3050 and 140VLD at 2900. I routinely shoot the 123 to 1100yd. It started life with a Manners T4A mini chassis which shoots great, and switched to a lighter Xray chassis. Both are very nice and very functional for prone position. Primarily shooting steel a 6-24 ffp Sightron was added, and for this style the ffp is the way to go for holding wind at multiple distances. Excellent caliber.

Ill be at ~$4k without glass.

Action $1600 with scope base
Trigger $200
Barrel with TBAC supressor mount $600
Manners T4A $1400
DLC coating $300

With that much $$$$ invested in the gun, don't cheap-out on the glass ;D

Mcmillan A5 is a huge stock. Far from a hunting stock. The A3 with a rem varmint contour is nice. I would go with 26" to make it balance a little better. It will still be a pretty bulky heavu hunting rifle. I like #4-#5 contours on hunting rifles.

Thanks for all the replies!! Now my main goal is to find a good rifle builder and to get the project going! What's the difference in the contours that were mentioned?

For 6.5 up to 139-142 gr projectile, you are best served with a 8.5 twist. For the lighter ones 1:8. Flame suit on as some have used other combos. I do this for a living so just my .02.

Krieger has all the contour listed on their site.

I think you got it backwards. Should be 8 twist for the heavier bullets and 8.5 twist for the lighter bullets.

The 115 to 123 prefer the 1:8. The 139 to 142 prefer the 1: 8.5. There are numerous recipes that others have that flip flop that but in the end, the lighter ones prefer the 8, heavier, 8:5. NOT starting a pissin match, just what I have found.

My experience shooting the 6.5's is with a 6.5x284. Most of the competition rifles around this area are running 8.5 twist for 140 grain pills. This combination is extremely accurate and has proven itself over many different barrels.

I run a 6.5x47 that has been necked down to 6mm and I run 105 Berger VLD's in it with an 8 twist. This too has proven to be very accurate.
