6.5x47 lapua on deer

Maybe this has been asked before but do you have any thoughts on 6.5x47 and it's use on deer sized game? How about for longer range shots on the larger varmints, coyotes etc? I am considering this caliber for an upcoming purchase. I do load so ammo availability isn't much of a problem. I've read the article on this site and would like some additional input.Thanks.

wmdron, The 6.5X47 Lapua is as close to the perfect deer rifle as anything I have ever used. I have killed about six deer with it since my build and all have dropped where they stood. The 130 Berger's are devastating and extremely accurate. I have also killed an Antelope in S.D. at a range of 545yds. also a bang flop. It works equally well here in Pa on the shorter shots. A very versatile cartridge that I will be hunting with for a long time. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Good Luck and good hunting.

A few friends of mine and I use it for deer. Like previously stated, it's about as perfect as it gets for deer.

Forum members jnewman and southtxhunter have used them to take some nice deer. The other reason they built the "47's" is because their kids can shoot them without worrying about recoil, it's a great all around cartridge.

I've been really pleased with my 260 Remingtons on deer. From looking at the Berger reloading manual, the 6.5x47L would be about the same, maybe even better.

I have killed a lot of deer with my 6.5X55 Swede Mauser 96 and we are talking about the same velocities as the 6.5X47. I have used 120 gr Sierra SP and ballistic tips and 140 gr Sierra and Hornady SP and all have done a great job. I have used the 130 Nosler Accubond in my 264 Win mag and from those results I believe it would make a one bullet do it all from close to long range on any deer.

I've killed 4-5 deer, a few antelope and 2 black bears with mine. One bear was at 60 yards and the other was at 710. It is a great hunting round. Very accurate that aids in good bullet placement for quick clean kills. My boys will be killing their first elk with this caliber.

SON I REALLY ENJOY MY 6.5X47 THIS IS BAD W/130GR VLD'S AND H-4350 POWDER MOST BIG GAME DON'T LIKE IT.................

Thanks for the comments and the convincing, I just needed a little push. I have a .222 on order and when it arrives which should be soon I hope, been waiting since May. I am going to order a 6.5x47.

wmdron, Just in case you need a little more affirmation here is one shot yesterday during the Pa., Buck season, again, bang flop, thank you Lapua and Berger bullets, just an awesome combination.

My wife shoots my 6.5x47 Lapua and 130gr Bergers like the above mentioned they don't go anywhere when hit. This is two years in a row she has hit a deer and they never moved from where they stood. Its a great set up for deer hunting very low recoil you can watch your hits through the scope.

Shot 5 antelope in Wyoming the first week of October with 140 vld and a stiff dose of vv n550. Ranges varied from 220-618, bullet performed great.
Had a muley license and never fired a shot, no doubt that 140 vld is tough to beat.

Cival, I'm in Monroe County, eastern Pa. Gate way to the Poconos, right on the N.J., Pa. line, I'm 10 minuets from the boat launch above Shawnee. Was actually very warm on the first day. Not so today, freezing rain and lousy road conditions, good day to catch up on reading my hunting rags. X-Ring is correct by the way, the recoil is very light and bullet impacts can easily bee seen.

Well, I'm certainly convinced. That's a nice buck Chuckhunter, I'm envious. I think a 6.5x47 is next for me and thanks for the info on the bullets, 120, 130 gr. seem to be the ticket. Good Hunting.

2 pronghorns-855 and 655
several whitetail doe over 500
many groundhogs out to 700yds
2 Whitetail buck at 550yds that I personally called "that is as far as We will shoot on them" At 180lbs we chased one down and got the other later. they are tough critters!
I am putting a 500-550yd limit on Whitetail buck, 700-800ish on whitetail doe sized game and varmints past that to @1k
140 Bergers have been awesome!
