6.5x47 Lapua neck.

Can someone give me a loaded neck diameter. I believe I have heard .290 to be a pretty solid number, but just want to be sure. I am going to be using recent production brass. I have sent two pm's to E.C. over the last two days with zero response.

Thanks for your help in advance,

Tony.

My necks are "turned / cleaned up" and a loaded round measures .289... I would imagine an unturned neck is right at .290..

I'm really sorry, I meant to measure some new brass but I haven't had time.

I always turn brass so I don't know off the top of my head. Sorry.

I turned mine to .289 for a .293 neck. Seems to work so far, as i am still doing barrel break in and load development. But as they say, I haven't wet the bed yet, but the night is long...

I understand, and thanks for the pm response Eric.

tonyb - Just measured necks of a couple of loaded rounds (twice-fired brass, loaded with S107MK), and came up with .288". My reamer print shos a neck dia of .2944", so unless I run into brass with variable neck wall thickness, I'll never need to neck turn.

New unturned Lapua (Blue Plastic Box) probably a couple of years old, Berger 130gr VLD Target, Mitutoyo Digital Micrometer shows 0.29055" give or take around the neck but in general up to 0.0005-6" over 0.29000" including pressure ring. A lot of neck tension straight out of the box so I would not use them myself without running a mandrel down the neck to relieve some tension first normally.

Depends on the bullet loaded so without knowing exactly which bullet being used it can vary.

Lapua brass, not turned, Berger 130, .290 loaded neck diameter.

That is also my measurement before turning but using 136 Lapua Scenars. Just started working up a load so not sure how it's going to shoot.

Just measured my ammo, Lapua brass (obviously), and 140 Berger LRBT... .290" neck loaded. Not neck turned.

Just a comment here but everyone seems to be rounding off neck diameter measurements or are they using calipers that don't have the accuracy of a micrometer.

My point, my calipres (Mitutoyo Digital) will show a neck diameter of 0.290" but using a higher grade micrometer it's more like half a thou bigger. If you are using a tight loaded round neck to chamber clearance that is a big factor where you can loose nearly 1/4 to half your clearance from taking the wrong measurement.

Also if using calipres with a narrow measure width blade compared to a micrometer are you measuring at the position of the pressure ring in the neck.

I believe for a no turn neck, a reamer with a .294" neck diameter is perfect.
Also the most versatile freebore is .175"
