6.5x47 barrel life

what might I expect as "normal" (whatever that means) barrel life in a 6.5x47?

I haven’t worn out mine yet. I have a 260 with over 2500 rds. It still shoots great.

I would think that it is dependant on your load. If it's hot, less life.

About 1500 rounds before a setback. Don’t know how many after that but would guess no more than 1000

Have seen the same barrel life out of straight 284’s

Got 2700 out of my original one - have a friend whose barrel fell off the cliff around the same count - F-class shooting.

Biggest factor in barrel life is how hot you get the barrel when shooting the rifle. I shot 260s in tactical competitions where at times the barrel was so hot you could not touch it. My barrels were toast at around 2000 to 2300rds. My last 260 barrel was at the end of my competition carrier and I had it set back at 1800rds and I finally pulled it at 3200rds but I never got it hot after the set back. It was still shooting .5 MOA at 600yds but would open up on out and I was starting to get "Unexplained" flyers.......

Another question is,,,.Chrome Molly or are you running a factory carbon iron barrel...

I get longevity out of the CM pipes since they are a higher grade,,, they take a bit better flash burn...

I'm doing a 6.5/06 in a medium couture 3,,,.the trick for me is to tap it kool at the shooting range,,, then load it hot for hunting season...

Yes,,, space out your shots,,, allow for kooling time or use a air mattress pump to kool the chamber and barrel fast... About $20 for the 12 volt battery pump...

2 minutes between sets will kool it fast...

Rubbing the barrel with a mix of 50/50 rubbing alcohol and water, liquid dripping off the bottom of the barrel will cool the barrel in no time.

Wash cloth and quart sized bottle is all you need.

Haven't been able to compair heads up the 6.5x47 Lapua to the 260 , I have a couiple 260's and use 308 Lapua brass to make my cases ,if you wanting to shoot the 140 class bullets real fast out of a short action then I'd suggest the 260 or the 260 Ackley as the added capacity with a 28+" barrel will do that but if your not worried about an extra 100-150fps then the 6.5x47 Lapua would be my choice.
1) its a good big shorter and that will allow you to feed from a mag much easier without alot of trouble and the need for an extended mag box
2) Less powder will not wear the bore as fast so it should get a decient amount longer barrel life
3) Lapua brass ready to shoot right out of the box

BUT

the Lapua brass for the 6.5x47Lapua is almost twice the cost of 308 Lapua for the 260 and if you even "need" that extra FPS the 260 will be more likely to give it to you

But with the new Berger 130gr bullets I'd certainly build a 6.5x47 Lapua without hesitation.

As mentioned above, it all depends on how hot you want to let the throat area get. I think I shot 7 barrels worth, from 2200 - 3800 accurate rds.
I did manage to mess one up bad in 900rds by not cleaning it and shooting moly, I hated it, my smith freelanced from my directions, and I made sure it went downhill fast. I'd get it so hot on purpose the barrel was still warm after a 30 min drive back to town.
