6.5x47 and Staball

Just picked up 3 pounds of it to try in the 6.5x47 with both 123gr Scenar and 139gr Scenar. I have tried H4350 and Varget and while the H4350 out shot the Varget I'm thinking with a 30 inch barrel the Staball could be a winner. Anybody try it?

Tried it also in my 6.5/47. Could not hit my acc node for that barrel before load was compressed which caused a seating depth issue as that barrel likes really light neck tension. That was with Berg 140 LRBT’s and Berg 130 gr VLDH’s. It’s a shame because chrono #’s were really consistent with single digit ES’s and it’s a pleasure to work with. Really meters well as you’d expect

What powder did you end up with then?

Went back to VV150 or RL16 and the 140 LRBT. Both those powders shoot equally well for me at around 2840 and are easy on brass.

I use RL16 with 123SMK. Maybe not the fastest velocity but very accurate.
Ain't that what its all about? I would trade speed for accuracy on any given day unless I'm going for steel plates out at distance. The matches I shoot in accuracy is king because its short distance and tiny groups, weather you threw it down range or got it there blistering fast if the results are the smallest groups (in the right place) you win!

Tested some loads today with both 130gr and 140gr and the results fell way short! Hodgdon's Staball max for the 130gr was 41.0-vel 2814 and the 140gr was 39.5gr-vel 2705
Loaded with same brass, primer and my rifle has a 30 inch barrel.
I got these numbers with 130gr.
40.4 - vel 2720
40.7 - vel 2733
41.0 - vel 2747
41.3 - vel 2778
These numbers with 140gr
39.2 - vel 2609
39.5 - vel 2641
39.8 - vel 2649
40.1 - vel 2682

Outside temp today in Ohio was 57 and the primer was Federal 205m which is Hodgdon's recommended primer. I might retest using the Rem 7 1/2 as they are hotter but not sure it will make a so-so powder awesome??

Read your entire thread and now think I need to buy Quick load...

As a user of QuickLoad for many years, lets me caution anyone considering purchasing it. Their database of powders is way behind the times. The only way you'll see Staball in it is if the manufacturer releases its list of chemical properties to insert in the "build your own powder" fields. Having those numbers is only half the challenge. Without actual range results to "adjust" its predicted behavior, its just a best guess. Ditto on new designer bullets. Its a useful tool for doing "what-if" workups when the weather isn't conducive to range time, like now.

Thanks that is very helpful information, think I'll just keep doing it the way I have been,... buying stuff and testing it.

Just suggesting that you not get a mind set in using only one primer. You did the right thing in testing. 7 1/2's are OFTEN the best primer to use, so test and find out. The 7 1/2 is a magnum primer but not as hot as the 450's.
