6.5x300 weatherby ?

I have a friend who was given his fathers rifle. It's a 6.5x300 Weatherby Mag. He has 10 loaded rounds and 100 pcs of formed brass. He DOES want to shoot it !! I know it's an older 1000 yard wildcat cartridge from the 70's. He has bullets but I'm not sure what they are yet. What are some of the modern powders that will work with this round ? He wants me to do some reloading for him.
Thanx again,
Rmist

The other idea I had was look up some 6.5mm STW data and start at the bottom. Case capacity should be close

There use to be reloading data in one of the Sierra manuals. Most of the powders they used were really slow and no longer available. I would try H 1000. Try googling 6.5-300 Weatherby and you might find something. if If remember the load data in the Sierra manulal was really HOT. Start on the lower end. Matt

It depends on what weight bullet he wants to shoot which depends on what twist the barrel has. Anything in the 130 gr and up get you some Retumbo and RL25. One of these will make it do it's thing. I would try Retumbo first. I have a 264 Win mag with a 27 3/4" Nine twist barrel and shoot the 130 gr Nosler Accubond with 66.5 grs Rebumbo, WW case, CCI250 primer and I get 3350 fps average and well under MOA accuracy. By the way this 130 Nosler Accubond is a great deer bullet.

I would think since it is Pa it is a Alex Hoyer built gun. It is probably like the ones they used at Williamsport. Should be a fast twist. Maybe Howard Wolfe built it. There are a lot of them around here. Most of them shot 140 grain bullets in them and slow powder. Matt

Another powder you may want to try is 7828ssc if you can find it its new. I've been playing with it in the 300wsm and getting some great velocity's with it.

Thanx for the replies. I did find out it has a 32" barrel and is 8 twist. He's going to check the bullet weight.

Retumbo, H-870, RL 33/50, 7828SSC et al(left our VV N-570).
Very slow commerical powders and or surplus slow ball powders are your friend.
Basically granulated kingsford is the right burn rate.

The 1000 yd load was 84.0 grains of h870 back in the po Ackley book.I also have the sierra book that shows it too. The bullet was a norma 139 gr match www.gibrass.com jeff Bartlett has wc870 cheap and he advertises it as the same burn rate as h870.

I have never used the 6.5 x 300 Weatherby>>>however, it is an EXTREME overbore and I do have experience in that genre.. If I had that cartridge and was shooting 140 class bullets, I would think that Retumbo would be the powder with H50BMG coming in a very close second. These S-L-O-W powders are just the ticket for extreme overbores>>.and they are temperature stable!

^^agreed^^... I used what seemed like kegs of H870 in this cartridge , very dirty , very hard on the throat and temp sensitive but did work.

As someone mentioned earlier 7828 short cut might be worth trying... I did also use 7828 along with 5010 but the 7828 was the std cut , it was OK for hunting accuracy but couldn't work up a decent target load or get the velocities with it.

This was in a gain twist 31" pipe and throated for 139 smk's

Good luck.

The newer powders are probably better then the old ball Powders. Some of those powders were so dirty and hard on the throats. I bet RE 33 would be a good one. When the 6.5-300 was popular they didn't have a lot of good slow burning powders. I even read on a forum where a guy put RE 33 in his 6-284 and achieved 100 feet more then the H1000 he was using. I know that powder has given more velocity with less pressure then anything else we tried in a couple of different cartridges. It seems to be good for overbore cases. Matt

Patch700 Try the new IMR-7828SSC you will get velocity with it!

Lol I gave up the 6.5x300 many moons ago after putting several barrel makers children through college lol , but yes I would have to agree with you that the 7828 short cut version would be a powder to try in this instance ....

Reloder 33 looks good in Quickload.
It seems to me, with the slow powders available, it's a matter of choosing a bullet that will hold together at the RPMs that the rifle will create when run to its potential.
I'd like to see what this case and a BC 155 VLD would do.
