Loading 140gr Hornady AMAX Moly. First time with moly anything. 50.5gr 4831 which is showing slight cratering around firing pin in primer. Same load with 142 Sierra (NOT MOLY) has shown no signs of this. Both bullets produce about the same accuracy and both are seated to touch the lands. (different COAL). I was surprised to see this as I would have maybe suspected the opposite results.(moly vs. non moly)

Can't compare results using two different bullets. Different jacket thickness, different jacket hardness, different core hardness, different diameters (once you measure to .0001" or better), different profiles resulting in different engagement surfaces and how the bullet engraves the leade.

If you don't know exactly what the variable are, exact comparison is not possible. Load data for different bullets is not directly interchangeable.

IMR 4831 ...I have no chrono.
Actually I did compare the two....I was surprised at the outcome....I know there are many differences and thus comparison may not be valid but the results just were not what I expected at all. And the MOLY is new to me. Many thanks for answering

50.5 of IMR 4831 is pushing it too hard. I developed load for Berger 140 VLD with that exact weight and almost screwed my rifle. The load is fine on a cold days but as soon as the temp goes up around 80 and above, the pressure goes sky high. I now dropped my load to 49.5.

When you say you 'almost screwed up your rifle' blown primers, head separation....??
I worked up to that load and was fine until the 2gr LIGHTER moly bullets resulted in the above. That is what puzzles me.
Is there any one here that is running that load with either the 142 Sierra MK or the Hornady 140 Amax Mloy?

Blown primer and broke the soldered bolt handle when trying to open the bolt.

Ive loaded imr 4831 and h4831 and 53 grains in mine is not even hot. Its a shilen 30 inch barrel and i shoot it in south florida where 95 and plus is to be expected. I do know I made a mistake and bumped the scale and found out 58 is way to much. But the bolt is fixed now and it shoots great again. I didnt break the handle off but ruined the extractor and had to have a sako installed. I have learned since that if the bolt wont open, dont beat it open take the barrel off and save the bolt. If the case is locked in the nose of the bolt have a gunsmith turn the case to shavings with a lathe and the front of the bolt wont be ruined, maybe. Ive run 53 grns with 140 Amaxs 142 smks and 140 jlks and never had even the slightest sign of pressure. I dont know why 49 or 50 would be too much but tolerances can and do stack up some times. Its been said many times to work up slowly and if you look for pressure signs you can avoid a bad mistake.

Coool. way to be thinking out of the box with the removable bolt handle!!!! I kringe everytime I bump another rifle digging a rifle or shotgun from the back of the safe. With your removable bolt handle, it may help in dinging other stocks while inserting or extracting from the gun safe. Please send your load data in aPM. OK ok just funnin a lil.... glad your OK.

Nothing serious. It's case of bad silver solder and an extremely hot load. Bad combination. I barely tap the handle with my rubber mallet, popped goes the case and so is the bolt handle. I re-soldered the bolt and then re-inforced it with 8-40 screw.
