6.5x284 reamer dimensions

What necks do most of you guys run on your 6.5x284 reamers. What is different about the 'Shehane' and the regular version?

My loaded round neck diameter is .2900 to .2905 inches. I don't know what chamber neck diameter is because I bought the gun used but I think it is .295-.296. I have a PT&G 6.5X284 Shehane reamer with a .290 chamber neck which I haven't used yet. The Shehane is the same case except the diameter at the junction of the case body and the shoulder is .485 instead of .476. Less body taper gives a little more case capacity. Bill Shehane says he changed it to make the cases eject more easily, not to increase capacity. I don't know if that actually helps but my regular 6.5 always ejected easily with the standard chamber.

I didn't know that making a case straighter made it eject easier? Is this really true? Seems counter intuitive to me. I guess there is also a difference at the base as well? Or are they both .501?

Everyone else I've told that to had the same reaction, but who am I to argue? Whatever his reasons might have been, I have been fireforming some 284 Shehane cases and they do extract fine but I can't say that they are easier or harder to extract than my 6.5X284 Norma was. It remains to be seen whether the extra few grains of powder will help. I never used max loads in the 6.5 but it looks like the 284 can use the extra charge. It's just not clear whether it will lift the velocity to a higher node. The chamber diameter at the rebate is .5009 on my 284 Shehane reamer versus .502 on the QuickDesign chamber drawing for the 6.5. Essentially the same as far as I know.

Some people like to see their name on stuff. With the barrel life being a bit short on the parent case, why add fireforming to the mix. Then people counter with 'the fireforming loads shoot so good, I can shoot them on the record target'. So why not shoot a standard chamber?????

Alf. I agree if you are refering to the 6.5X284. I have seen no reason to go with anything other than the standard chamber. But, it remains to be seen whether the extra capacity makes the 284 Shehane a better choice than the straight 284 Winchester. The new 7mm Cartridge Guide on this site thinks it might and some people are already doing very well with it. Jim Hardy seems to feel he is getting an extra 100fps with match accuracy using the 284 Shehane. That would be worth it to me. I guess time will tell???

My 6.5x284 has a .294 neck. It allows for total brass clean up while maintaining a reasonably thick neck.

My .260 has a .294 neck and it REQUIRES that the necks be turned. Just wondering out loud if the 6.5x284 brass is any thinner or thicker in the neck than the .260 stuff, I have to resize .243 Lapua and it is too thick)

I just measured the necks on a couple of new 6.5X284 Lapua cases. Neckwall thickness varied from .0145 to .0155. Don't know the lot number.

That is similar to the .260 brass then. My Nosler brass is about .0125 which is too thin.
