6.5x284 Norma…Strange POI

Have a weird occurrence taking place. Have a Cooper Long Range with a carbon fiber barrel in 6.5x284. I was having issues with erratic poi when shooting. I’m making sure that the barrel does not get hot or too warm. I swapped out the scope for one that I know is good. Got it sighted in at 100 yards today and it will shoot good groups, but I went to shoot steel at 300, I held on the head of a full size steel silhouette and the shot went over the head. Hold over should have been 3.6 moa, so I was expecting it to get about 12 inches below my aim point. Shooting Sierra 140gr. At 2720 fps. I have never run into this type of situation. Scope and rings are good and tight as well as the base. So I’m at a loss as to what might be causing this any help or feedback that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

2720 seems awfully slow for a 6.5x284. Is that velocity verified? Everyone ive shot with having a 6.5x284 typically averages around 2950-3000 with 140 bullets, mine included. Thats not even pushing them hard.

I think you may be shooting at a higher velocity than what you have calculated for and holding over too much.

Velocity was verified today…. Just starting load development and working my way up. Just had this issue today at the range. Using H4350.

With 200 yard zero mine is dropping roughly 6" at 300, that is wth a Berger 140 hybrid at 3070fps, 24" barrel Cooper Excalibur, 20 moa base and night force ultralight medium rings, I want to say I am 1.5" above center of bore but maybe 1-3/4". Something sounds amiss on your setup. Keep us posted please.

You mentioned putting on a new scope, is the new scope first focal or second focal? And if second, did you make sure you had it on its zoom power that is true to the reticle?

It is first focal…. I think what I will do is the next time I’m out of the range I will set up one target at 100, 200 and 300 yards. Once I have re-verified my 100 yard sign in I will then shoot one shot at each target and see where the bullet impacts Using just a center hold.

no weird pressure from a carbon ring is there, actually I have no clue if it would spike or not

Okay… First chance I had to get out to do a retest and verified my 100 yard zero, had to make a correction. I was about a minute high and a minute left. Next five shots one right next to the bull’s-eye. And the drop at two and 300 yards were spot on. At this point, I’m not sure what caused the high shot at 300. I may have to chalk it up to an atmospheric phenomenon.
