6.5x284 barrel length

What would be the shortest length of barrel that you would want in a 6.5x284?

For long range competition, 30 inches is the standard length.

I shoot only F-Class. Both my rifles have 30" barrels, but I have never shot one with a shorter barrel....and I would have to buy new rifle cases ifi went beyond 30"

Well, it is a multi purpose rifle. I target shoot(just fun, no comp) and hunting. Right now the barrel is 29 inches, it has 418 rounds through it. I want to have the barrel set back and I am thinking about shortening it up as well, it is a bit heavy to carry around.

I was thinking about 25 inches. Will velocity suffer to much with a barrel that short?

I shoot a 27" in long range competition. I've shot a 30" and really didn't loose any velocity in giving up the 3 inches. (thought I would and was told I would, maybe 30fps.) A 25" barrel would be good for what you want. I have a fluted 27" Lilja for my 6.5 hunting gun.

I'd shorten the barrel you have now, then use it exclusively for hunting.

Meantime get another barrel (same specs or something different) for target shooting then switch between the two, extend the useful life of both.

I cut mine to 25-26" range. Last two were 25". Chambered one up tonight and will see what it finishes- probably 25.5". They get enough velocity for hunting and field carry this way. If it were and F-class, I would probably lean towards 29" -30" but for field use, those barrels are too long.

Nope, it turned out about 1/8" shorter than the last one; right around 25". Shoots like a dream.
