6.5mm-06 Ackley Improved

Is there anyone on the forum w/knowledge and or cartridge drawing of 6.5mm-06 Ackley (40 degree shoulder).

I was just going through a rifle or handloader mag the other day and there was an article on i think it was a shaw rifle a author had built in 6.5-280AI. let me find the mag again and ill post it up

While alternatives are mentioned, i add this consideration,

The 7mmWSM, 30" bbl ,120vmax at 3600fps, has more fp and less drift than the 300 varmiter offered above,
at 1000 the drift is 28" less with the 7mm!!!!

fp is 669 vs 494 - no competition
high bc will do it every time

Bob

I shot the 6.5/06 AI for four years in 1000yd BR both HG and LG. Loved the cartridge and performance, got tired of fire forming. Had winning performance with RL-22, H4350 and H4381 sc all in the 49 – 52 gr. range. Have to test, also blew some primers. 142 SMK up to 3400 fps with some pressure signs, best results at 3000 fps, Still shoot one for prairie dogs with good luck to over 1000yd. Now shoot 6.5/284 little slower than the 06, but can buy good brass. Precision shooting has good article a way back on fire forming and load work up. Can’t remember issue date. Sorry

Mike, you're right. I remember an article in P.S. back in '91 where Bob Jourdan, from Bartlesville, OK, tried a 6.5-06 AI and got more speed and barrel life than the .264 Win Mag he had at the time.
You should call or write Bob, he's a terrific guy and I consider it along with Charles Benke as the guru on all .264" matters.

I followed the article and had no issues. Started with Lapua 06 brass, ran through 270 FL dies, trim, then 6.5 /06 FL and left a .010 270 bump for head spacing, turned neck and then load. No jamming the bullets for the fire form shot. Worked great.
