6.5 XC

Anyone played with this chambering? I am looking at something with a touch more capacity than a 6.5TKS,similar to 6.5 Dasher) and less than a .260.

I can get a consistent 2650fps from my 6.5 TKS with a 24" barrel using Lapua 139 gr Scenars.

Troy,

I have shot both a 6.5 X,6.5-08 held 0.132" short, using reformed 22-250 brass) and a 6.5 Viking which has only minor differences in the shoulder from the TKS. The 6.5 X had a 28" barrel and the 6.5 Viking a 26" barrel. I believe that the 6.5 X has about a grain less powder capacity than the 6.5 XC.

I was able to achieve just under 2750 fps with 139 gr Lapuas, coated) in the 6.5 X using H-4350. The testing was limited because the barrel was a very poor barrel and was changing with virtually every shot.

With the Viking I was able to achieve just under 2650 fps using VV # 150. I was unable to achieve the velocities that some others report with the TKS or Viking. "Your mileage may vary" on these velocities.

I am presently awaiting more information about the 6.5 x 47 Lapua as I think that it may fall into the same general category as the 6.5 XC, but that remains to be seen.

Though I have not compared the actual case capacity of the 6.5 IHMSA with the 6.5 X or 6.5 XC I believe that it is very similar. I think any of the three will fall into the category of being a little bit less than the 6.5-08. It just depends upon how much velocity with which bullet you need.

Your velocities with the Viking are exactly what I am getting with my 6.5 TKS. I too am now waiting to see what the 6.5x47 Lapua is going to be like.

I want a case with slightly more capacity than the 6.5 TKS but less than the .08 case with a minimal amount of case forming. I would like to be able to actually buy and afford the brass.

I think the best potential with these size cases, factoring in accuracy, velocity, and BC, will be with the Lapua 123 Scenar and like-sized custom bullets like the Cauterucios.

With my 24" 260 Rem, I was hard-pressed to drive the 139s/142s much past 2820. When I switched to the 123s, it was like magic. Groups shrunk 30% and got rounder, primer pockets stayed tighter, and I got to 2960 easy with no pressure signs, using H4350.

The 123 is a very good bullet--accurate, and not fussy about seating depth at all. With a .547 BC it beats all the 6mms except the DTAC 115. If you run the ballistics, if you drive it from 2950-3000, it is very competitive with 139s launched at 2750-2800.

If I was shooting the new 6.5x47 Lapua, the 123 Scenar, the Finns say "skih-nar" accent on first syllable) would be the first projectile I'd try, and H4350 or RL19 would be initial powder choices.

Norma also makes a 130-grainer with a very high BC, but that bullet is hard to find and, from reports, it is harder to tune.

Mr. Moderator,

The TKS and the Viking have a huge following in the metallic silhouette world. I do not doubt what you say but for silhouette the idea is to shoot a bullet that is going to smack the rams over but not beat you up doing so. The 123gr bullets are a little on the light side for consistently taking the rams.
The 139gr is much more capable of taking rams as there is more bullet mass and more dwell time on the target.

My TKS is just on the small side and I would rather have just a touch more capacity to keep the pressure down a bit and still get to 2700fps.

I just got a 7 TKS reamer in the mail to shoot the 7mm VLDs so we will see how that works out.
