6.5 x284

Toby, I went down the road you're on, all worked out well, shooting a lot kept my mind in the right place. Good Luck

6.5 or 7 BR even a 30 BR, The bigger the bore the longer they will live over your 6 BR. The benchrest guys say they don't know how long a 30 BR will last no ones ever shot one out.

Toby, If you don't believe these guys (WHICH YOU SHOULD DO) then look at the range reports in competition shooting and you will see what's winning. You DO want a chance at winning don't you?

The Dasher in the right hands with the best load is probably going to win the majority of the matches at 300yds. Thats why it will be my next 6mm. Pat

At 300 yards even with a Dasher I wouldn't bet against you with your 6BR !

You are a wise man JBO, in NOT betting against Pat. He is an excellent shot indeed!

I do not compete formally but do enjoy shooting, like they pointed out the 6.5-284 isn't the best round for what you are looking at for a 300 yard rifle, sure it is plenty accurate enough to compete but recoil and barrel life make it not a wise choice for just 300 yards.

Current build I am looking forward to is a CZ 527 in 6.5 Grendel. Not the most popular boltaction round but am looking forward to seeing what I can do with it, if nothing else will be a good little low recoil rifle for hunting in Texas with some informal target shooting to 1k.

tobycoda, I think if you want to build a 6.5-284 then do it. At the end of the day, its what works best for YOU. However, if you want to extent your search for that specialized round for 300 yards, may I recommend a 6XC or maybe a 6BRX. I know several high master sling shooters that make the 6XC sing at 300 yard matches. I have also withnessed an aquaintance shoot a perfect 3 relay 600 score with a very high X count using a 6BRX at 600!!! yards in F Open. Not on a bench. In my neck of the woods, I don't see many Dasher shooters at F Class matches. Maybe I just don't get out enough but if there are any perfect 600 scores with high X counts using Dashers in F Class, by all means, let me know.

6PPC, "6BR", 6BRX, 6 DASHER, or a 6.5x47 shooting 123 grain bullets.

For 300 yards, any of the above will get the job done.

A 223 in a well built bolt rifle shooting 90VLDs gives up nothing but recoil to the 308s from 600 in. (Beyond 600 the ballistic programs say it will run with the 185s, but I'm not convinced, most everyone who has tried it at long range has gone back to the 308. not particularly relevant to this conversation, but for info) The Berger 90s can be finicky to get to shoot sometimes, but the 80 class are easy to get to shoot great and to 300 yards will shoot with pretty much anything else. Cheaper bullets, available components, less powder than just about anything else, and barrel life that seems too good to be true. The little varmint cartridge really is a good round in a bolt gun, people just usually think of it in gas guns.

If your goal isn't competition then I think a 223 will do what you want it to do for the lowest overall cost, and the fun factor is high. If you just want something bigger, or different, any of the small case the 6s listed above or the 6.5x47 Lapua (or a 6x47L) will be accurate crazy accurate and fun to shoot.

Unless you are just going to shoot 1000 yard matches. I would go with something with a lot more barrel life. I have shot out (4 barrels and they were down hill after 600 rounds and maybe before. If you decide to go with the 6.5 X 284 buy a couple extra barrels right when you have the first one installed and you will be good to go for 1800 rounds. Excellent caliber very very hard on barrels. It has it's place for sure.
