6.5 x284

Look into European 300m competition and see what they use.

I have several 6.5x284s, but they don't come out if the safe until I get past 600 yards.

what difference...bulls eye I guess you would call it..bench or prone

If you are looking at some form of "prone" shooting as in F-Class (F-Open) you are WAY over-gunned. If you already have a .264 barrel, and want to shoot competitively at 300 yards, I would seriously consider a 6.5 x 47 Lapua. It is VERY accurate, will literally DOUBLE your barrel life and you will gain NOTHING at 300 yards by using a 6.5 x 284 as opposed to a 6.5 x 47 Lapua. If you don't have a barrel yet, I would also consider getting a 1-8 6mm barrel and go with a 6 Dasher>>>virtually unbeatable at 300 yards.

>>>virtually unbeatable at 300 yards. Some straight 6brs can shoot and hold their own with a Dasher with less forming involved. Ben may have oversold the dasher a bit. Though my next 6mm will be a Dasher. I have seen them truly shoot well. Pat Lundy

Pat>>Good to see you back on here again! Have not seen you in awhile. Remember, I had a 6mmBR a little while back. Awesome round indeed! I will soon own another>>>but if you run 10 / 300 yard F-Open matches say 3 x 20 and do it under various weather conditions, from "relatively calm to blustery", what cartridge would come out on top winning at least 6 of those 10 matches? These are with 2 shooters of the same ability, with loads that are peak in each chambering. Obviously the term "unbeatable" is to advance the accolades of the Dasher, but name 1 cartridge that could beat it day in and day out..

The Dasher in the right hands with the best load is probably going to win the majority of the matches at 300yds. Thats why it will be my next 6mm. Pat

When you get it, call me, I can help you to save A LOT of frustration and components!

GOOD REPLIES...But you still did not answer my question as to if it would be a good performer at 300 yards...That was my main question..I know it is an excellent long range cartridge..But what will it do at closer range ??? I shot the hell out of my 6br...infact went thru 2 barrels...Just want something different now..And the 6.5x284 is my choice this morning...lol

Well let me answer your question - a 6.5x284 can be a good performer at 300 but it is not the optimum cartridge to use. If you went through 2 barrels with your 6 BR you will go through 4 or 5 with a 6.5X284 shooting the same number of rounds. I shot one in F-Class for a couple of years and the accuracy started falling off at between 900 and 1000 rounds. Tried the barrel setback deal and it cost more than it was worth. I am at nearly 3000 with my current 6 BR and it is still shooting good and my Dasher is still going strong at 2000 rounds. As far as accuracy goes it will shoot very good - for a while - but probably not as good as a 6 Dasher or a 6x47.

Its the best cartridge EVER..... Benchrest and F class shooters across the USA are using it win every match they shoot at 300 yards and under.

Is that what your looking to hear? I don't think its going to happen. As a long time 6.5X284 shooter I would not choose the 6.5X284 for what your thinking of using it for in fact I don't like to shoot it at 600yards either, just 1000yds. I have a 6BR for that less than 600yard matches and it excels in that area.

A little bit on the effervescent side Russ>>>but the point is well made!

ok,point well made and excepted..I will look into something different then...Thought about going 22-250 but had several bad reports as well.....Maybe the 223 will be more practical...Whats your thoughts on this..Reason of thought is because where I live here in new york, there is nothing more than 300 yard matchs, without having to drive 3 hours or so..So maybe you guys can comment on this as well..Thanks for your valued imput.....John

Then it depends on your competition. F-Open is ALL calibers under .35.. F-T/R is either .223 or .308 and it MUST be shot off a bipod. So if F-T/R is on the agenda, a .223 is okay>>>not quite as good as a .308 BUT not bad either. If F-Open is going to be pursued, a 6mmBR or 6 Dasher will make excellent, difficult to beat, rounds..

6.5x47 Lapua. ... an 8 twist will allow you the choice to use the 140 class bullets should you decide that's what you'd like , yet will still work nicely with 120-130 class bullets.

Mild recoil , decent barrel life , inherently accurate .

You'd be burning 10 grains less powder to achieve velocities that are 100-150fps less than the 6.5x284.

Reamer selection is key with regards to obtaining the above velocities.

I personally always liked the 284 case and would have no qualms building another given the availability of specific powders such as H 1000.

For someone who wasn't completely comfortable that their technique and other equipment wasn't of a very high standard I would suggest another cartridge to start out with if you plan on doing a lot of shooting.

Good luck on your build.

if I do this it will be on a savage action and be single shot..But right now,I am under going this bull shit cancer stuff..So maybe I never will do it..Wishful thinking right now..But damn it,I need a plan to keep moving forward right now... :o

Having goals are important Toby. .. Life is short and barrels are cheap.

Sorry to hear of your situation , never give up and good luck to you.
