6.5 x 57???

The military chamber for the 7X57 suck's for most of us in the US. I would have my own reamer made to specs for the bullet you want to shoot in a good brand of barrel. The 6.5X57 would be my choice as I love the 6.5 bullets. I first built my 6.5-06 in the mid-80's, since the 6.5X57 needs a medium or long action I had a M70 that I rebarreled to 6.5-06 as I had a good amount of 06' brass. I was lucky to find a Douglas barrel that had been sitting a long time in a gun shop in that "odd" bore size and got a very good price, I won a medal at the NRA State High Power Match with that rifle in my class.

Has anyone here put a rifle together based on this round?
I've heard good things about it.
I have 7x57 that I cannot get better than 1.5" groups & I'm considering this 6.5 chambering as I like the 57 case.
Have also considered the 257 Roberts AI but I bet the 6.5 would be more inherently accurate.
Anyfeedback would be appreciated.

I have a Venezuela Carbine, FN, made inbetween wars for their police dept in 7x57, 2" at 200 yards with 140g Nosler Accubonds, 3x9 scope, still in the original stock. Chamber in this rifle has a short leade.

I suspect that you just need to tweek some loads.

I could never get the 162gr A Max to shoot from a beautiful Chilean Mauser. I think the A Max is too long for the 10" twist of the old rifles, it shot the 140gr Partition (?) really well. My go to bullets are always the Sierra Match Kings. The Swedish Mauser with a 7.6" twist and 140gr bullets is usually a sub MOA combination.
I had a sweedish mauser, 6.5x55 with a 7.5 twist barrel. Beautiful barrel, nary a pimple od zit in it, strong riflings....I tried 4 or 4 different makes of factory 140-156gr rounds as well as some handloads. That darned thing keyhole at 40 yards. I pulled the barrel, put a featherweight Douglass airgauge on it chambered for a 6.5 on the 8x57 Improved necked down. It's now a great shooter, a pleasure to carry, and im looking forward to letting her feed. She l[ks hungry!

The original post was 2016.

Nine years & not a single mention of the 100s, if not 1000s, of WW2 Arisaka bring backs that were rechambered to 6.5x257 Roberts. Much like the plethora of 8mm-06 Mauser 98s of the same era due to there being no ammunition for the original chambering until many years later.

My 1st centerfire bolt gun was one of those Arisakas, complete with an intact mum, chambered by a guy named VanPatten (sp?) in Milford PA, & sporting a Richard's (I think) Microfit stock. In the days of $25 SKSs, $350 700s, & similar priced Model 70s, it was a bargain at $150 with dies & brass. No ammo available, handloading became a necessity creating yet another expensive hobby a flat rate auto mechanic with a young family couldn't afford & it's gone down hill with a few speed bumps, but no brakes from there. Wouldn't have it any other way. :D
