6.5 x 55 savage rifle?

Hello everyone,

I would appreciate any suggestions on my thoughts for my rifle build.

I would like to eventually buy 3 Savage model 116FCSS rifles with detachable box magazines in 30-06 . The first I would leave as is in 30-06 for a basic hunting rifle with a scope and maybe add iron sights. The other two I would pull of the barrels for spares for the first.

The second would be like the first but rebarreled to 6.5x55. The third rifle, for lack of better terms, would be setup as a long range “tactical” rifle with a heavy barrel around 26” in 6.5x55.

My first question would be if all savage rifles standard bolt face work with the larger case head of the swede round? Has anyone done this recently? It's only a difference of around .006 of an inch. I plan on using lapua brass and handloading. Does U.S. made brass use the correct head size or the standard .473”?

Second, what barrel manufacturer and rate of twist would you suggest? I plan on mainly using the 139-142 grain bullets. Any opinions on the number of grooves, or what works best for the 6.5x55?

Third, mainly for the long range rifle, what stock would you suggest?

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.

I would suggest a 30 inch for long range 3 groove pac-nor 1-8.5 twist. .925 at barrel and straight taper. I would also suggest a tighter chamber. No Turn .298, Turn .294 neck minium sammi spec chamber.

I turn my necks. These barrels have been great for me. I have one on a Savage single shot action. Shoots great, Baby Dick was hitting the spotter out of the target with it.

I have found in 6.5x55 that Winchester and Federal brass are .473 and Lapua is .479. I was able to get the Lapua brass into the bolt face of my 25-06.

I have a savage single shot stainless and I have done nothing to the bolt and it works just fine.

Shouldn't be an issue. Use quality brass like Lapua and never look back.
