I know these two questions have been beaten to tinfoil in the past but I could use some help .
1) will .293 allow for a no turn neck ?
2) what free bore length ? Particularly if leaning toward 123-130 bullet weight.
I have a .293 neck .177 FB reamer coming from Manson but am second guessing . I can have it reground to shorten FB easily since Manson is close to me.
Please reply based on recent experiences
Many thx Gentleman

I’ve worn out several barrels with a .167 shooting 123-140s.

I think mine is a .295. With the variations in neck wall thickness these days I’d plan for .004 clearance because you might end up with .003.

I’m building everything with .004 (or more) clearance now there is simply no reason to be old school BR tight- even they don’t do that anymore.

My loaded rounds measure from .290" to .291" depending on bullet used, IMO, .293" is too close for comfort.

My reamer has a .2945" neck dimension.

It also has .123" freebore, which lets me touch the lands with 130 Bergers, keeps the bullet away from any potential donut when seated, and fits in a 2.800" Remington mag box with room to spare.

I ran a .293 last year with a .167 and could only get 2 different 130s to fit above neck shoulder junction. The 130 OTM hybrid and Jlk 130s. Berger 130 vlds were shoved too far in the case. For 140s I would stay with your longer freebore. Jmo jgs reamer used and Kelbly built.

I did use the 130 AR Hybrid, but odd enough my 140 Elites fit above the shoulder as well.

I don’t care much for VLDs so I can’t comment on where they’d fit. My Reamer is also a JGS.

I think longer is better if you’re not confined to a 2.800 box

Clancy I agree about VLD's don't care much either too finicky , I'm thinking@ moment I'll gamble on neck @ .293 and have them shorten FB to .160 sorta splitting difference ?

Here ya go, 130 VLD in the lands a hair:

My experiences line up more with @alf than with some others. IMO .160" freebore is on the long side for a new barrel and 123-130gr bullets. My first few barrels were .123" and they worked fine with 130s new.

Once I decided to get married to the caliber, I sent a few loaded dummies with 130 VLDH to JGS. This is what we came up with (attached). Ø.2945 no-turn neck, Ø.265 freebore diameter & .145" freebore with 1.5deg leade. Ø.293 is asking for trouble on a no-turn. Likewise, I think some tend to overlook the freebore diameter and go too small.

I have a .293 and running a projectile back in a fired case it's just touching so it's borderline. This is for f class so I just monitor it and wouldn't cry if I had to neck turn anyway.

Yes!
Been having my 6mm reamers cut .244 FB diameter and have zero complaints! I don’t really know why guys cut them .2435, what’s it help? Maybe I’m missing something.

Clancy, we had to learn the hard way. Reamer makers state right on the reamer print that +/- .0005 is within their spec. Now throw in a reamer that is ground a little smaller than reamer print, and a barrel that is .0002 tighter....Houston, We Have A Problem!

My reamer prints don't say +/- .0005". They say +.0005".

My 6.5 x 47 reamer has a tapered neck, .2935" - .2945".
