6.5 x 284 Vs. RCBS shellholder

Why are my Lapua 6.5 x 284 Win brass so darn hard to get in and out of the recomended RCBS,or any) shell holder??????

I have to almost knock them in with a hammer and the same to remove them! It is getting frustrating because it takes so long for this step....

Thanks for any help.

I had this problem with Lee shell holders. I use two old RCBS #3's now, and they work great.

If they go in fine when new, but not after firing, like JB is aluding to I think) they are overpressure loads and expanding the web. BTDT

My dads WW brass had the same prob, and lapua after 7-8 firings...i just took a dremel to the lips of the SH a bit :D

I'm with Chris on this one. So long as you start with a quality shell-holder, e.g. Redding, RCBS, if the case fits fine when the case is new AND fire-formed with a sane load, if you find that it is quite hard to insert, you've got excessive web expansion. I've found such cases will have loose primer pockets and the accuracy edge will be gone--forever. BTW, see this week's BLOG. If you take a shell-holder with you to the range, it can be used as a quick/handy over-pressure indicator--if you can't get the case back in, you're too hot.

Thanks for the info.

The brass has been that way from the get go... hasn't gotten better or worse after several firings.

I wasn't looking forward to putting the Dremel to it. I may jus try a different holder, maybe I got one made on a Monday...:D;)
