6.5 X 284 COL?

Hi I am having a 6.5 X 284 built Remington 700 LA. just made a dummy round Lapua brass and sierra 142gr match-king bullet, the COL that I came up with is 3.150". the start of the boat tail is just above the neck shoulder junction. this will be a hunting gun with a no turn neck .180 free bore.
My question is does this sound right for a COL with the 142gr Sierra? I will be shooting Acubonds and Barns X bullets for hunting, but would also like to shoot the Sierras and try my hand at long range. furthest I have shot is 650-700 yards just messing around.

Is the reamer going to allow you to seat out that far? That is the main question. Mine will but I spec'd the reamed just how I wanted it for a long action. You are in the right neighborhood though.

If you are only shooting out to 700 yds, you are better off with the 130s though. Try some Norma or Berger 130s to a similar COL or even a 123 Scenar. I haven't found any advantage to 140s until I hit 900+ yds.

dennisinaz You are probably right about the 130's I have a box of them also, but for elk hunting I want to shoot the 140's or Barnes that run long so would prefer the longer free bore. I can have the chamber cut to what I want work is being done by a company that is into long range, and I will be sending them the dummy round so I want the COL to be correct. seems like I should seat it deeper so that the full neck is being used. At this point it's .020" shy of that. Never had a barrel chambered so I don't want to screw it up.

Yup, that's perfect. My reamer's got .188" freebore.

My OAL's run around 3.120" with trimmed meplats.
